Hey, everyone.
Since I've been learning Japanese for a while now, I'd like to try reading some raw manga. I usually read Seinen/Josei though, so I've been having a hard time searching for suitable manga with furigana. Here's what I'm looking for:

Necessary:

  • Furigana (so either Shounen or Shoujo)
  • scanlated in english (for reference)
  • not too complex (no strategic battles or detective stories with 10 pages of explanation)
  • setting similar to our world (historical or fantasy elements are fine, but don't recommend something like One Piece)

Preference:

  • I'm not too much into your average school romance shoujo story; recommend shoujo only if you think it's exceptionally good or simply different from the rest
  • no harem. if it's harem, i want the mc to be determined who he/she's going for

No Shounen-Ai, Yaoi or Hentai please. Borderline and Ecchi only if there's more to the story than that.

I'm sure there are others here who have or are learning Japanese, so I hope they could recommend something they've read. Looking forward to your recommendations 😃

Renai Shimasen ka? - Should fit your request. It's seinen but it has furigana. The whole thing was scanlated already.

I found myself being able to read RAW Tsuki Tsuki! and Maga Tsuki with my very limited japanese skills. Though those are just ecchi harems, so it's not quite what you wanted.

Do you intend to read the raws online, or order them in tankoubon form? I personally recommend the latter, as they're small and easy to carry around. And they're cheap~

Unfortunately, my main two Japanese reads are One Piece and Detective Conan. Though, Detective Conan is pretty good in the range of vocabulary. One chapter they're in a ski lodge, and another they're on a cruise ship. It's fairly dialogue-centric though, so you'd have to have an interest in the actual story in order to get through it.

I like reading Glass Mask. A lot of people are put off by the old style art, but it's an amazing story.

I also read Doubutsu no Kuni...The setting is similar enough, doesn't use many made-up words.

Again!! has furigana, it seems. Seinen. The story pulls some nice unexpected stuff at times.

Koe no Katachi also has furigana. Seinen.

Yotsuba&! - looks at tags This is shounen...? Isn't it more seinen?

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Pretty much any shounen/shoujo has furigana, seinen/josei not so much...Try reading Dragon Ball or Death Note.

Shinryaku! Ika Musume is the best fit for what you're looking for that I can think of. Furigana with very little, if any, handwritten text that doesn't have furigana.

Jitsu wa Watashi wa might work too. It's currently being scanlated (though there are far more RAWs than there are translated chapters). Although it has a hint of harem, it's a non-ecchi series and the it's a rather fun manga. There is furigana.
