Ichigos father was a Shinigami captain before Ichigo was born. Then he lost his powers, got married, and had a few kids.

He did lose his powers...Ishida's dad made a comment to the effect of "when did your powers return?"

Also, I believe that Isshin may have been the 2nd squad captain before Soi Fon. Soi Fon seems to be relatively new (aside from, say, kenpachi) and the space would have become open when he lost his powers for whatever reason. I don't think he was the 11th Squad captain because Kenpachi pretty solidly killed that guy (but I could be wrong).

This also begs the question of whether Ichigo's mother was also a death god (although I highly doubt she would be a captain -- since she was so easily killed by Grand Fisher).

I thought Yoruichi was the former 2nd captain.

Everyone just assumes that, because Soifon is the 2nd Division Captain. And they make the assumption that Soifon got all of Yoruichi's former positions.

If isshin's powers were surpressed/sealed during the past who knows how long, it's not impossible for ichigo's mother to be the same case if she was a shinigami as well.
Urahara is capable of making gigais that turn souls back into humans, so the same thing could've happened to isshin and masaki. If they used Urahara's gigai and turned back into humans, then they'd still retain their shinigami powers although unable to use them. They might have to undergo some sort of training or procedure to regain that shinigami power again possibly similar to what ichigo did.

Isshin is captain level and Masaki was probably strong enough to hold her own if she was a shinigami before. The reason why I think she might be a shinigami before was that she probably saw grand fisher's true form the night she died, hence her jumping in to save ichigo.

umm, hello? ichigo's mother was killed by a weakly hollow while trying to save her son ^^
she probably had some powers, but a shinigami she wasnt, at least not at the time ^^
my guess is that isshin got the hots for her when he was a shinigami and she was a human, broke some dead important rule of shinigami's and came down to live a happy family life with her, while their kids are half shinigami half human ^^
note that zangetsu once said that ichigo has his own shinigami powers, and not only rukia's ^^

My best theory is that the gigai that turn shinigami into humans were originally tested on Isshin. This is completely unsupported, but it would create the connection between Urahara and Isshin that seems to exist. That gigai is pretty cool, though, if it allows you to breach the laws of nature and return to life.

Anyways, I'd like to think that the reason that Urahara made that gigai in the first place was because Isshin fell in love with Ichigo's mother, a human that could see spirits. In order to be with her, Ishhin would need to cross over to the human realm, and Urahara uses the opportunity to test his abomination. After all, I don't think he created the special gigai just to hide the orb of distortion, but rather that he used the opportunity that Rukia created.

Anyways, we don't know enough. So we can only speculate.

Grand fisher wasn't a weak hollow, stronger than most and actually made it to the wanted list of the soul society. Ichigo wasn't in that much danger if there was nothing there that night, since it showed him and masaki on the river side after the incident.
So, she clearly saw something to be threatening enough for her to jump in, if it was just a normal ghost, it wouldn't be a problem right? (Plus, it wouldn't be the first time.) The only way for her to know what a hollow looked like would be either she was a former shinigami OR Isshin told her about them. Either way, we won't know until we get to Isshin's flashback arc.. 😛

What I wrote was all based on IF she was also a shinigami before, didn't say she was one for sure. 😕

My theory is that Masaki was a quincy, likely Ishida's aunt, thus the reason He and Ishida's father are so well acquainted. I think Isshin fell for her and was found out and stripped of his powers by the soul society for his relationship with her. His powers we're reactivated because the overflow of Ichigo's reiatsu wore down the seal holding back Isshin's reiatsu until it finally broke. What do you all think? Plausible?
