Please help me find yaoi/BL like this!
Where the protagonist is either a criminal, a victim of a criminal or someone hunting down a criminal (e.g. cop/detective), and the atmosphere of the manga is very dramatic, dark, serious and gritty. <3
It should NOT be comedy, or have any overtly funny moments.
The plot should also be rich and interesting. REALISM is very important, both in art and in the theme (no ridiculous plot devices or pointless melodramatic fillers; even if any tragedy occurs, it should be realistic and have a "this could actually happen in the real world" feel).
Examples: Acid Town, Let Dai, Banana Fish and Grant My Wish.

The first thing I thought of was Togainu no Chi… but it is not what you would call realistic. It is missing some requirements of yours, but fits others quite well so I hope this is a decent recommendation. It is set in a grungy post apocalyptic world where crime has taken control. There is a shounen-ai manga, a yaoi BL game, and soon to be an anime (not sure the rating) for this series.

Even though it strays away from regualr realism, it still feels somewhat realistic.
It's unscanlate, but maybe Stanley Hawk no Jikenbo - Kamen.
I flipped through the raws and it seems to be a crime-based title.
Judging by the author though, it's probably not too realistic and filled with weird drama. X3
(that's why I luv her though, hehe)
Don't Stay Gold might fit. And her other yakuza titles, like NightS.
And maybe Endless World.
Hope this helps. ^^;
Edit for annoying mistakes that get worse when I come down with colds. >.>
Hrodulf and Bjornolfr, you will not be forgotten.

I really liked UGH. I think this is a good fit as far as violence and crime goes. I cannot vouch for the realism, though. I haven't been in a prison before. :-D

I wouldn't say it fits. Too many (unfunny) jokes are thrown in at times and Ayase looks so girlish looking and cutesy that its hard to take the story seriously. He's also completely unreal. If he fought back and seemed angry it would actually be a lot better. He just sorta takes everything and weeps.
Negai Kanae Tamae might fit...maybe. Oops..you read it. Ok well..Ugh might kind of fit. ...But some parts..not so much.

Prisoner (KAEN) it's unrealistic, but it's about the ciminal-detective relationship in kidnappeing/robbery senery.
Border story of a detective.
Yellow sory of...what was it, sweepers? the hire-to-find drug people that take care of criminals (even though they are not official police) and involve assasins.
Mask a sort of a crim mystery. its comical though.
Missing Code thief and bodyguard
Fake detective romance.
hope this helps~~

Under Grand Hotel <> By Sadahiro Mika http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=2583
Takes pace in a prison in the US-- Manhatten, NY I believe-- jokingly called the "under grand hotel," its a prison strictly for the irridemable rejects of society. Sen is a young Japanese man who has been sentenced to life in prision w/out perole for killing his lover's husband in cold blood. It's a very gritty, realistic, and violent manga, with a good solid ending.

You may like
Endless World (maybe it's not exactly what you're looking for, but it's a wonderful, mature manga)
Bannin and Like as the Time Will Come When it Will Rain (both are oneshot collections, but there are stories you may like)
Even if they're not what you want, I'd recommend them, they're great manga, more on the serious side.
