I read this manga a few months ago, but I lost a whole lot of things when my hard drive fried last month so I have no idea what the name is and searching through the forums has led me to multiple dead ends 🙁
It's about two boys who are best friends. In this alternate universe, in order to keep a balance in the ratio of boys to girls, before kids/teens reach full maturity, they run the risk of changing genders.
One of the two boys ends up going through that change and instead of hiding it, he returns to school as a girl and embraces the change—even though it freaks his best friend out. The two eventually fall in love, and I think the series was a few chapters long (it was fully scanalated, though). The ending had the boy-turned-girl coming out of a cocoon in order to complete his/her metamorphosis after a four (or somewhere in that range) year time skip.
