Description

When Ah-ryoung was only a baby, her mother made a pact with a demon named Nachal, who would claim Ah-ryoung's body once she turns 15.
She has inherited her mother's considerable spiritual powers but that "gift" that allows her to see ghosts even from an early age, has made her an outcast for the other kids.

I started reading this series about a year ago, forgot about it, and then in a fit of spontaneity I remembered it and picked it up again. I've gotten up to the current scanlated chapters so far, and I like what I'm reading.

Gwisin Byeolgok is about a young not-so-typical girl named Ah-ryoung. What's not so typical about her is that she's a natural born medium who has seen, spoken with, and in some cases played with ghosts ever since she was little. One day, she finds a box under her bed, a box her father told her not to open until her fifteenth birthday. She opens the box and discovers an archaic hairpin with what appears to be a talisman of some sort tied around it. She undoes the mystery tag on her happy belated birthday present ... only to have a wily evil spirit invade her body... Yep, best present ever!

As it turns out, Ah-ryoung's mother formed a contract between Ah-ryoung and the ghost Nachal when she was still an infant. The deal was that on Ah-ryoung's sweet fifteen, Nachal would take possession of her body; a body that he wants very badly. He's going to be sent to Hell, and he needs a mortal body to fix that. It doesn't hurt that Ah-ryoung's body practically exudes yin energy, the source of energy for spirits. So now, poor Ah-ryoung has to contend with Nachal, among other spirits and the reapers of souls themselves for the right to live.

I'm not going to lie; this is a really typical shounen story. It has it all: the possible Mary Sue/ Gary Stu teenage lead, the supernatural forces out for aforementioned lead, ludicrously evil and irredeamable villains, and side characters, oh the side characters.

But despite all these nitpickings, I just can't not like it. I really enjoy reading this series; it's no masterpiece, but it has a certain appeal. You can find tropes and cliches like you wouldn't believe here, and yet it uses those well enough to compel the reader into reading a bit more.

Mabye it's good, mabye it's bad, mabye it's just average, I don't know. Hopefully I'll be able to develop a more in depth opinion as the series goes on. But so far I at least have a positive opinion on Gwisin Byeolgok.

why does the subject need to be named anyway?

Starts out pretty funny, with a dynamic that isn't based on kisskiss-slapslap relations, but rather a girl trying to coexist with some asshole that wants to take her over her body. They butt heads often and he only helps her out when she is in physical danger.
It is shown that demons, spirits, reapers and gods feed off of the yin and yang energy of people, and that they increase their input by making contracts with certain people.
This defines how most battles work, where the supernatural beings face off, often for human resources. A lot of shapeshifting is involved.
The best part about this is how the supernatural beings try to bring ruin to humans with their schemes, manipulate them into contracts and make them do horrible acts. This toying with humans and some truly gory action makes this a little more gritty than your typical shounen. The demons (cause it's mainly demons) themselves come across as more of a subversive force than mere villains, beings that can only be defeated by proxy and not hurt themselves.
It has a lot of good ol' tragedy and some mean stinkin' villains is what I'm getting at.

Art is pretty rad, humor is pretty funny, there's goodies, baddies and the morally ambious(sies), and the author is probably much smarter than he let's on in his omake.

A cute series that reminds me a bit of "InuYasha", not so much because of the plot but because Nachal has a similar wild personality as InuYasha.

A mother makes a pact w/ some sort of spirit demon named Nachal, in return, he gets her daughter's body when she turns 15 years old. If Nachal doesn't get a body, his soul will be dragged to hell.

On the other hand, Ah-ryoung has grown up as the wierdo in her school because she's always been able to see and interact w/ spirits that one one can see. However, she's been marked on the death lists for shinigami to take her away when she turns 15. So we have Nachal whose after the possession of her body, and shinigami who are after her soul.
I think it's cute that the heroine is a bit dense and weird. It's also amusing how Nachal tries to trick her into giving up her soul to the shinigami so he can haver her body for himself. It's also interesting when Nachal does take control of her body and kicks ultimate ass w/ it.

Overall, I really enjoyed this series. The artwork is also very good. I can't wait to read more.
