Description

Was it a dream? Young, brilliant Ivy wakes up in her family’s home after weeks in ancient Egypt, transported there by a magical bracelet. She can still see him—Bifitu, the charismatic prince, who became one of Egypt's greatest Pharaohs.

And she was Nefertari, whom history would record as his beloved queen. But something had changed. Bifitu is now all but forgotten, the archives noting he had died just two years into his reign. She has to return, to set things right... even if it means her life.

Not Great, But I was Bored

This has a similar feeling to Red River, except it's Egypt instead of Macedonia. The storytelling isn't quite up to par though and character development is poorly done. No real bonding moments, just moving from one event to the other, and a possessive ML who -loves?- her despite barely meeting/talking with her, feels like he more liked her looks than anything else. The only solid bonding time you see is when they go shopping about 2/3 through the story and that's even cut short. There is some pining incest too, that leads to weird and hard to reason out behavior. You rarely see anything that makes any characters' emotions or reactions seem realistic, or even believable. It's all just kinda thrown together. I had high hopes, but was left wanting even at the end.

Overall, an alright read. If you like this and haven't read Red River, I highly recommend it as it does what this story fell short of.

This is just a beautiful story, I did get aggravated because of the male lead but he just wanted to protect her. There is a part in the story that I read at night while having caffeine and because of that I had a nightmare so I don't suggest doing what I did.
The art is amazing and so beautiful, the story is unique and it made me cry.

Wow, this is bad.

White-washing. Egyptians had a range of skin tones from olive skin to chocolate brown. What's with all the pale clones strutting around with silver or red hair😕 You can accurately portray dark skinned characters and still assign them with weird anime hair colors. There seems to be some fetishism of westerners-- pale skin/eyes = more attractive according to this comic series.
Misogynistic main dude. The pharaoh is awfully clingy, obstinate, and creepily possessive from chapter one, then this behavior is fetishized as he and the MC fall in love. At one point, the manhua completely glosses over the fact that he abuses/rapes her until she goes into a 24-hour-long coma. Why? Because he was angry at her for something beyond her control. The inconsistent treatment of women in this series is not something young girls should learn to romanticize. I get that this was about a historical time period, but that seems more like an excuse to fetishize abuse.
The series features incestuous thoughts between the MC and her brother pre-time travel without ever providing a healthy way to cope with such situations. It just becomes a weird plot point presented only to spice the manhua up. People fall in love with each other just because why not, so it's hard to really be invested in any of the pairings.
Plot disconnect. The story either moves too slow or way too fast. Whoever wrote the dialogue for this story needs to commit seppuku. This series might be enjoyable for a 12-year-old, but if you are a young adult this will be a hate binge.
shallow time travel trope usage. She brought a bag of modern goodies back 3000 years and then never uses it again. At one point, she drops a pistol. No one questions it after the scene ends. She also keeps wearing wigs and bad disguises, but never tries to hide her rare blue eyes with colored contact lenses when going undercover.
MC flip-flops between being a helpless crying girl and a misguided stubborn idiot. I guess at least it's very believable that she's 17, given how naive she seemed. The MC apparently was about to go to Oxford, and the author keeps telling us how smart she is. Yet the only time she is ever helpful is when she pulls facts she knew from the future. That's not genius; that's lazy writing.

On the bright side, the aesthetic elements of this series were pretty alright. Characters are well drawn and the costumes are well designed. Having the comic in full color was also nice. There also wasn't much female vs female rivalry, which is always a plus.

Red River's fanfic?

First part was a bit of a nighmare, the heroine was impossible to like but it got a bit better later. Still, this is more like a fanfic of a girl who wants all the boys to be in love with her, not a great story.

If you like the Middle Eastern romance, I recommend Sora wa Akai Kawa no Hotori, the story is very similar, time travel to Middle East and helping the ruler with her knowledge. What the hell, even the pharaon Ramses in in both. The only thing is that Red River is a manga with great characters and good plot. To be honest, Pharaoh's Concubine seems to be Red River's fanfic.

Drawing was what gave me strength to keep reading on. I'd hate to leave it unfinished, but alas, it was as expected. Subpar story telling and the dialogue was flat. Very cliche but it was a quick read. I wouldn't waste my time on it...there's more better drawn and better told work out there and this one.

I went into this thinking it was going to be bad due to reviews and whatnot, while also thinking that the male lead was cheating on the protagonist or believed in polygamy, but as I continued to read I was pleasantly surprised. Although I know this type of story may not be for everyone, for me it was amazing and I know I will definitely come back to it in the future.

This type of story will definitely not suit everyone's tastes though and this is why. The story's ML (male lead) is possessive of the FL (female lead) to the point of obsession where I would almost call him a yandere over some of his actions, everything he does is so that he can keep the FL by his side. Even after she continues to leave him he still loves her, becoming more scared/possessive each time thinking she will leave him, yet he never hurts her in his quest to keep her by his side. Instead he uses everything in his power as Pharaoh to convince her to stay and be his wife. For me, this type of possessive/yandere romance is something I actively search for, so accidentally coming across this gem truly made my day.

Something else I really enjoyed about this story was how smart the FL was, throughout the story she uncovers plots and shows her genius, even to the very end chapters she doesn't back down and continues to be a strong female lead.

I also like how the Author handled competition on the female lead's side. I really don't enjoy when the FL has to battle with other woman to get her man, so this story was also refreshing in that the ML always takes her side and get's rid of other woman before the FL even has a chance to show concern. There is no arc where the female lead feels inferior to a rival eyeing the ML and there are no arcs where there is a rival plotting to kill the FL ovre the ML's affections.

There is only about two chapters where a girl tries to kill the FL but even then it is only presented for the sake of plot. And in those chapters you can tell that the author probably wasn't that passionate in writing girl on girl rivalry for a man On the other hand, the ML has to deal with quite a few guys eyeing the FL.

Another great thing about this story is the art. The site I started reading it on, the beginning chapters were a bit blurry so I was worried when I started reading, but around chapter 15ish it cleared up. So I think it was just a problem with how the site uploaded the chapters. Anyways after that I was really pleased with the beautiful and interesting art. For me it was a nice bonus.

Overall, the story was definitely not perfect, the author could have developed some of the rising action a little better. And given some of the background characters a little more personality but for the majority of the story I was highly pleased. If you have ever read and enjoyed "Ouke no Monshou," or any of Wann's stories like "100% perfect girl" then it is very likely that you will enjoy this story. Or even if you just enjoy male yanderes or possessive guys like me, then this story is definitely for you!

Premise very similar to Red River, but in Egypt rather than in Anatolia and with incestuous tones even before the time travel.

The art is rather pretty, and there are pretty characters everywhere. The main character also has basic knowledge of her environment (the society, history, people, culture, etc) due to her fascination with Ancient Egypt pre-time travel, but don't expect to learn anything through this. It's still primarily a romance.

As for the romance, well. So far, he's just the typical shoujo controlling, manhandling, possessive, arrogant, rich male lead, except he's also a light-skinned Egyptian prince.

Speaking of skin color, everyone should be darker, and levels of melanin shouldn't correlate with levels of attractiveness. (I rolled my eyes when the darkest character to show up was also one of the least attractive - go figure.)
I find it...interesting, to put it nicely, that the main character is a blue-eyed blonde. Wonder why. (That's sarcasm, btw.)

Don't necessarily hate it like I would stories that use sexual assault as a plot device and idealize abusive relationships (though this is veerig closer and closer to the latter w the concubine mess), but don't really like it either.

Pros: art (if you like this kind of art), intelligent or at least well-informed female lead, time travel (this is a personal pro since I love this genre)

Cons: stereotypically d**chey male lead with power/money/status, incestuous themes, colorism (and racism), gender roles, historical inaccuracies
