Bakuon!!

Description

Sakura Hane has to ride her bicycle up several steep hills just to get to her new high school. As she is desperately pedaling, she sees and hears a motorcycle zoom past her and instantly falls in love with it. It turns out that bike was driven by her new classmate Amano Onsa, one badass girl who decided to attend this school because of one reason, there is no policy against motorcycles. Not only that, there is apparently a motorcycle club on campus. Hane and Onsa instantly become friends and she is able to convince Hane to start riding a bike. Now the only thing Hane has to do is get a license...

Bakuon is a great and special thing. An easy favorite. Top Gear x K-On

A most charming send-up to K-On and Top Gear plus the author's very obvious love of motorcycles makes for a great manga about fandoms with a heaping helping of Orimoto Mimana's unique and excellent, kind of cynical sense of humor. I love this manga. I wouldn't necessarily call it "fun", but it's definitely relaxing a lot of the time and it's without a doubt funNY. Wrote a review on it. The series is great even if you have no real interest in motorbikes.

Bakuon!! is fun. It's a lot of fun. I'm afraid that unlike the last commentator I'm not Sophisticated and Mature enough of an unvirgin (lol), to dislike this manga.

To call this K-On with bikes isn't a slur, in fact it's how this manga is actually advertised (unlike the original k-on manga however, this isn't a 4koma). The girls are hilarious, the plot is largely episodic and Larry David'ish (no lessons learned), and the level of motorcycle knowledge and trivia displayed would make the editorial board of Cycle World applaud. Seriously, I have no clue why the other guy says "I actually have a motorcycle license and am interested in a proper series about the scene", as the manga is larded with bike culture references. It's almost like he hasn't gasp actually read the manga.

To sum up if you like bike trivia and culture, cute-girls-doing-stupid-things, and zany, lowbrow, madcap humour, then give this a shot.

Just a post script of sorts, the other commentator accused Orimoto of drawing naughty manga in the past, that's true. So have the mangaka of Yotsuba&, Ghost in the Shell, Black Lagoon, Shokugeki no Soma, Medaka Box, Negima, Gunslinger Girl, Tenchi Muyo, Bastard, Keroro Gunsou and Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō. Plus hundreds more.
So what's the point? Who knows? ask him.

It teaches us one important lesson about otaku

I don´t care about this vapid K-On clone but it represents the mangaka´s first anime adaptation despite cranking out one creepy softcore porno after the other. He decided to skip any overtly sexual content here for once, despite this being published in a sex magazine, and out came his first long-running series. Not that ecchi elements don´t exist but at least no one gets raped this time. The lesson here is that the market is more interested in virginity porn/pandering than actual porn. Lol. I have a motorcycle license and am interested in a proper series about the scene. Read the car-focused Wangan Midnight (8/10) instead, as a good manga about motorcycle culture still has to be written. It has characterizations, a plot, research into the scene and dynamic art. All that is missing here in other words. Why would anyone draw racing scenes almost exclusively through close-ups? The one redeeming value here is that it´s night and day better than the author´s other works but being boring and derivative is shifting into higher gears for Mimana Orimoto.

Update: The series now has more than 20 volumes due to having an ongoing Gaiden manga making the overall series over twice as long as Akira! There is no plot, character development or any form of exploration of the scene it is supposedly set in but no end in sight either. The artist still has no idea how to draw objects in motion or make his racing scene exciting in any way after over a decade (!) but the series is obviously not about any of that. As I said before. Make moe blobs, not porn if you wanna make money.
