Description

26-year-old Tsugumi Kawana reunites with her first crush from high school, Itsuki Ayukawa, at a get-together between an architecture firm and the interior design company she works at. He sends her heart aflutter until she realizes he’s now disabled and in a wheelchair. At first, she feels she couldn’t date a guy in a wheelchair, but then her feelings begin to change.

Just finished reading all 59 chapters for free on Palcy (it's free to read until 20th April 2021).

It was a great read. I learned a lot about the difficulties that disabled people go through in various aspects of life. From the various medical complications that come with not being able to move and feel certain body parts to how limited the places that they can actually travel to are.

I don't know how many times I've cried reading this. I mostly cried because of how difficult it was for Itsuki and Tsugumi to finally get to their first happy ending.

I'm sure there are some who are frustrated by the complicated and roundabout way the romance in this story progressed but to me, it felt realistic.

I've always wondered why people get back with their exes but Tsugumi and Itsuki's relationship helped me to better understand how relationships aren't exactly straightforward and how the time and distance spent wih other people and away from each other can help them reassess their feelings for each other.

I like how the insecurities and worries of the various characters were fleshed out in the story. Sure, some of the characters might seem unreasonable but I think it's pretty believable because people can really become strange when it comes to the people they love.

There's so much more I'd like to share but

Tldr; Story was great. Very educational about difficulties faced by the disabled. For me, the conflicts between individuals and family members and the rationale behind the conflicts felt realistic. Halfway through, it might feel draggy for some but it's worth reading to the very end.

I agree w the two commenters who said it was ‘initially interesting’ and couldn’t tell if it was ‘shoujo or josei’. There is a good deal of effort to give a good perspective on wheelchair bound persons and the challenges they face, which is why this even got a 7 (in my book it’s a rate that means ‘somewhat readable’... but without the wheelchair details, personally I would’ve rated it 6/5, meaning barely readable) but as the leads moved on from their introductions and slowly developed their relationship with each other and then started to have their conflicts... well it suddenly became shoujo, at some point it overstayed its welcome, and even the resolution for the conflict was quite lackluster. I hoped and expected more from this, but at the end I just scanned through to see what eventually happens without any strong vested interest for the leads. It’s a shame really, the author could’ve made a great manga out of this.

Inclusive Manga, but it hurts me

I love the representation of disabled people in manga, such as Your Lie in April or Silent Voice. I don't have any Deaf friend, and these manga has helped me to built my interest to know more. This manga also felt special when there are conditions like Ayukawa, a wheel-chaired person. From this manga, I learned about how people in wheelchair live, the problems and limitations they face, and after reading this, I became more aware to the public space I visited.

I really hope Ayukawa and Kawana can go together in the end. It really hurt my heart seeing both of them have to be separated. They could and should be happy together. 🙁

...but by volume two it was boring, using clichéd and unbelievable jealousies to create (weak) tension. I was disappointed with the weak and tired direction the story took after starting out fresh, unique, realistic and interesting.

I generally like the story. I am not disabled, nor do I intimately know many people in wheelchairs, but I think the author does a great job of pointing out the difficulties people in wheelchairs face on a daily basis.

My main complaint is the female lead--it's like she's a 15-year-old trapped in a 26-year-old's body. I'm hoping the story will develop so we learn why she's like this, because if we don't, it's really a disservice to the readers. I really expect a woman who's coming out of her mid-20s and running into her late-20s to have a level head. The misunderstandings between the couple are also the misunderstandings of teenagers. I give the lead male a pass because I'm certain that suddenly facing a disability makes you think differently than your normally would and also because he's in his 20s and in my experience (as a much older reader of manga), men really don't emotionally mature until their 30s.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a romantic at heart and I'll keep on reading just to see these two permanently get together (if they don't, I'm never reading anything by Aruga Rie-sensei again). But it feels like the author originally planned a shoujo but then was told by editors that they needed a josei so she tried to shove the same characters into an "adult" rubric. It's incredibly frustrating. Good story, but I hope it ends soon so I can be put out of my misery,

Seemingly realistic.

I am a student studying nursing, so I am glad that they include the problems that come with many types of spinal cord injuries such as pressure ulcers, incontincence, and phantom limb pain. It adds realism to the story and may even help readers better sympathize with those who are physically disabled in that way. Anyways, haven't finished it yet, but I like the leads for the most part.

a more down to earth josei

This is really good. Since it's josei, it's got that warm, pinkish, power of love kinda thing, but the disability part isn't watered down at all* and is presented rather realistically. Right from the get-go the male lead is very upfront about what daily life in a wheelchair is like, especially the parts healthy people don't really think about, or try not to (like defecating), and the reality of his situation hits us earlier than I expected. I thought a josei manga would only approach the medical complications derived from chronic immobility once the pairing's love was going strong and steady, as a way to bring drama to the narrative, so the display of bedsores before they started dating took me by surprise. Rather your average josei that deals with two people in love and the human drama that accompanies them, it turnas out that Perfect World is about the dificulties a couple has when one of them is in a wheelchair. The judgement from society, of course, but also the inner demons each of them has to struggle with personaly in order to be a better person and a better partner.

Yup, I like it.

*from what I can tell. I have absolutely zero experience with people on wheelchairs, both in reality and fiction
