From J-Novel:
Sagara Sousuke isn't your typical high school student. He reads military enthusiast magazines, responds to questions with "affirmative" and brings grenades to school in his bag. Though everyone at school takes him for a hopeless military geek, Chidori Kaname thinks there might be something more to him. When their plane is hijacked in the middle of a field trip, Kaname's instincts will prove correct: Sousuke is an elite, mech-piloting mercenary and he's here to protect her.

If you like military fiction I think you'll love this. Sosuke is an interesting and complex character. If you've seen the anime or read the manga but haven't read the source I suggest you find these books. The anime only covers up to about book 5. I saw the animes and couldn't wait to know what happened next so i read the books. Let me say that the series just gets better. I eagerly await the next anime adaptation. But what I like about these books is the insight you get into the character of Sosuke. He is a man raised as a soldier trying to blend in to civilian life, while this is at times comical it is also rather tragic. Particularly when he tries to recognize romantic relationship without ever having witnessed one. Sosuke is the kind of badass character that sort of the odd man out that is trying to find a place to belong. Great series and one of my favorite main characters.
