i really like the initial version of the king of games, where he carelessly kill/ disfigured/ turn them psychotic etc, for the as little reason as taking a spot in school fair to big ones like trying to kill him. all the other characters in this domino city are also crazy from teenage gangs that kill other kids to force them joining, teachers that expel student left and right, and megalomaniac that kill people in front of thousands of spectators. yami yugi i supposed can be forgiven since he is just nuts, but the others? hell, even jounouchi dont feel anything throwing a guy to his death. this manga is just crazy.

so, if you can stand out of bounds craziness, i guess you can read this. but dont, no matter what, try to think rationally about the characters. you can enjoy the games and enjoy the deaths, but trying to find any semblance of rationality here will only turn you off.

I'll start off by dismissing any comments that use the word "merchandising", for the OCG didn't exist until after the TOEI anime series ended, in 1998, 2 years into the manga's run (I'd say about end of the Duelist Kingdom, begging of Battle City-ish). In fact the whole "Duel Monsters" thing was actually a spoof of Magic: The Gathering, made to be original to the series.

That being said, this is one of the best manga that ever was written. The story is interesting, alot different than typical 90's shonen manga. The story was intricate, involving a lot of plot and characters that would reoccur. The story had both it's dark and light sides, the main character having a change of heart going from a sadistic judge, into a heroic warrior. While the evil-doers are punished, the over arching ideas of unity and strength in numbers still show.

The characters are very three dimensional, and have interesting back stories, relations to other characters,etc etc. The art style is weird, but wonderful. and the ending was over all satisfying.

it is a perfect read, with little to no flaws about it what so ever. read for the story, the characters, the originality, the artwork, the history, anything really!

but most importantly, read it as a manga, not as part of something yo already know

This is a great manga and anime series if you read and watch the original Japanese version. The English pretty much dumb down everything to kid friendly. The first 7 volumes of YGO is pretty dark, but it has a good to it. Volume 8-31 (aka Duelist) is pretty much like the anime, but a bit more darker (although not as dark as the first 7) And you don't have none of filler stuff to it. Also, there is none of this "Heart of the Cards." That's English dub bulls****. It's all about "Shin no Duelist" (True Duelist) and believing in one self.

To be honest, the English adaption of the manga is pretty much dumb down as well, and it has very poor typesettting. Just try to imagine as if it wasn't.

I would definitely recommend reading this. It's not just playing a card game call Duel Monsters, it's about gaining confidence in one self. It's about over coming adversity all while playing a card game. ;D

If anything, give the first 7 volumes of YGO a try (YGO, not YGO Duelist.) If you happen to not enjoy reading the Duelist arcs, then skip over to Memory World (Millennium World.) The first 7 volumes and last 7 volumes are a great read.

I've seen the whole anime series in both Japanese and English, and of course the Japanese is overwhelmingly better (none of this 'Shadow Realm" bs). I even LIKE the Japanese series (including the original one produced by Toei).

The manga is much darker and thankfully has none of those obviously filler arcs. Some of the seemingly insignificant differences are also the best.

For example, Yami Bakura kills Pegasus J.Crawford in order to retrieve the Sennen (Millennium) Eye. Yu-Gi-Oh! R is a good side-story and compliments the original well.

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX would totally s*ck if you didn't have Tenjouin Asuka for eye-candy, and the Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds manga is a horrible adaptation of a fairly good anime series.

I think that Viz and Konami are really riding too much on the franchise. Yu-Gi-Oh! probably should have stopped with Yu-Gi-Oh! R, and Yu-Gi-Oh! GX should not be allowed to exist in any way, shape, or form, except for maybe Tenjouin Asuka 😉

Well, I'm sorry I have to say that I'm totally disagree w/ the previous comment.
I've read all volumes of Yu Gi Oh! Including Yu Gi Oh! R & GX.
I think this one is good, and the sequels are even better.
If you read manga as entertainment, then you will love this series. It's hilarious and sometimes superflous, but still a good read.
You could say that this one is definitely for child, since the story is quite childish. But if you compare this one to similar series like Beyblade, Medabots, etc... Yu Gi Oh! is simply the best!

This manga could have become one of the best shounen manga's of all time if it was nothing more than a pure comedy manga.

yu-gi-oh! is written in a way that it want's people to take it seriously, but by doing that it loses the little respect we have for it. trying to take this manga seriouly is like saying pokemons are real. it just doesn't work. it started of great with the whole shadow games and when they started dueling with the whole dramatic card drawing it became nothing more than a joke and the anime did help this either.

don't get me wrong the real card games with the official rules is brilliant. and the fact that cards are so powerful that they can destroy people was the last line.
when it come's to stupid concepts this manga is up with the best of them. the art is average and the whole manga is an overrated piece of garbage, but i do recommend it if you want something bad to laugh at.

better than the sequel

This Yu-gi-oh series doesn't focus on the card game...It's a slice-of-life story with supernatural and dark events. The Yami Yugi from the sequel and the Yami Yugi from this series differentiate greatly. In this manga Yami Yugi is kinda insane and sadistic

for example he sets people on fire

To be honest I like this sadistic Yami Yugi more.
Furthermore, there are more hints of Romance between Yugi/Yami and Anzu than in the sequel.

I read this series several years ago at my local library, and loved it when I found that it was nothing like the kids' TV show. It's not only much more mature, but so much more entertaining. There are many more sides to the characters, and you learn to love them, idealistic as they are.

Well, I quite enjoyed this- for the first 3-4 volumes or so, at least. In fact, I do intend to pick it up again once I have the time to do so.

If you're looking for a -slightly- darker Shounen series you've probably found it right here. I can't say it's a particularly 'lighthearted' thing to read, but it's not too heavy, either. Nor does it have all that much re-read value. In fact, this should fail epically in /so/ many levels. But it just... doesn't, solely because this is a very well crafted Manga.

No, it's not for everyone, but it's clear to see it's charm. The characters are well developed, which in my opinion makes up or the slightly predictable plot.

Yes, by all means, give this one a chance. But please, don't confuse it with the hideous sequel that it spawned O.e

I really liked the beginning of this. Art wasn't awesome, but story was different. Then they had to switch it to a card game. Now I'm not biased to card games, hell I play them all the time. The games that were played in the beginning were always different, and stories were darker. Not now, there all about a little card game. I think character development was also pushed to the side a bit too. The art does get better though so that's really the only improvement to the series.

Don't get me wrong the manga doesn't suck after the beginning arcs, it's just that it would've been so much better if it would've stayed to the way it started. Darker, no as world changing, more character development and some different games once in a while.
