The opening chapter starts with a gay man in a wheelchair explaining to a girl that Christians invented the fable that Eve seduced Adam with apple to have an excuse to oppress women. At several points in time a character will look directly into the camera and say that sexual violence and drug abuse are cudgels of western expansion. The mangaka deleted his twitter due to harassment after criticizing Shinzo Abe post-assassination. This uneven, messy, cyberpunking the fuck out pro-tsundere adventure is undoubtedly Endo's masterpiece and I love, love, love it.
The pacing and plot threads of this story are all over the place. By the end it kinda devolves into scifi (vague hand gesture) apocalyptic somethings with the character studies-- the best part of the damn thing-- taking a seat on the bench. The story goes from introspective quiet daily life to brutal action to political intrigue to actual sex comedy to transhumanist clusterfuckery, I'm gonna be honest I'm not sure what the hell was happening for a moment since there are so many characters and so many genres smashed into one, but that's not why we're here. We're here because Endo is a master of writing short stories, and when he's doing that in Eden, it's really, really fuckin' good.
Eden is about people. The lowest of the low. Whores, drug dealers, killers and the kids they leave behind. There is a strong focus on sex workers and the struggles they experience without ever getting exploitative (there's plenty of explicit sex but when it comes to sexual violence, you never see more than you have to-- what is important is the effects of such violence). I was pleasantly surprised to see many Muslims which one user here complains are all terrorists but I want to point out that everyone in this comic is a part of some violent illegal organization, Islam is treated respectfully and the "terrorists" are using violence as a means of liberation from real-life oppression. Never thought I'd see a manga tackle Uyghur genocide, but here we are. The manga zeroes in on the characters very messed up lives to craft beautiful stories about how to be human amidst unimaginable cruelty. A lot of these people are indisputably bad. My favorite character by far is a nympho hacker cybernetic sociopath lady who keeps discarding her children, but somehow Endo is able to make this abominable person extremely charismatic. The female characters in this are great. Very headstrong and sexually in control, Endo clearly has a type lol.
Art is incredible, obviously. Really clean seinen style with some great looking action. There's lots of gun and some funky lookin' mecha. The characters are somewhat realistic but are still able to emote all silly when need be. I don't have much to say except "it's very good looking" and "he sliced that guy with a mecha arm, so cool"
I love this series because it loves people and their experiences. I honestly don't think you have to read the whole thing to get the full experience, since I admit it gets kinda wonky at the end. But if you want an action story with a wide breadth of everything, this is it. It's bloody, it's heartbreaking, it gives its main character a pink apron and a nice ass, it really is a wonderful world!
