Description

Unabashed queerbaiting

Queerbaiting to the point where ML believes he is gay based on his interest in Fu Jiu, who he knows to be male. It reads like a shonen-ai e-sports manhua, such as "Does love at first sight exist in e-sports?" but PSYCHE! No one's actually gay here, so it's "safe" and any issues that LGBT folks have to work through can be conveniently ignored and skipped!

Qin Mo claims to not care about gender (after realizing his romantic feelings for "male" Fu Jiu) and, despite being a prominent figure in the spotlight, seems pretty unconcerned about his gay identity. He has not had any previous romantic interests of female gender, so at least the plot avoided the being "turned gay" trope (remember, bi- and other sexualities are non-existent in most comics).

Can you imaging falling for a person of a gender you didn't know you were attracted to, going through self-discovery, and preparing for the related challenges, only to find out you were mistaken? Well, Qin Mo is quite unconcerned and unperturbed by it. Because this manhua only cares about giving sexually suggestive queer moments to the audience that eats it up.

Interesting but confusing

I think there's issues both with the translation and with the adaptation process. The novel is EXTREMELY long (1700+ chapters and not over yet), and packed with informations that was probably hard to convey all in comic form, especially in a timely manner. Plus a lot of things that are culturally/gaming specific and not explained in translation or any kind of notes.

For some examples:

Fu Jiu makes money by carrying paying players but it is really brushed over and assumed every reader understands the way it works and how lucrative it is (and either I'm too out of touch with current MMOs or it's way more common in China because she makes so much out of it, damn, girl)
Her mom leads a talent agency for gamers and the plots goes back and forth between the present and past depending on when it's relevant to the plot, but with all the other stuff happening it's a nightmare to follow

- one of the biggest plot points, her being raised as boy by her mom, is explained really late in the story, and is because the dad made his wife abort two times because he absolutely wanted a boy. I am guessing it ties into the one child policy.

I am still pretty early in the novel, but it feels clearer even if there are still some awkward translations.

I love most of the characters, Fu Jiu is very sassy and clever. Her fat friend is treated pretty respectfully (although another character is nicknamed Fatty but I think it is not seen the same way in China) and has a real personality.

What I dislike the most is Qin Mo's possessiveness that is really over the top and inappropriate, and the power imbalance between the two. Mo is a rich, powerful, adult CEO while Jiu is (at least in body) a high schooler in a complicated financial situation. From what I have gathered the soul isekai'ed into Fu Jiu's body is an adult woman, but really, was is that hard to have her a year older and at uni?

Half-baked and misleading

I'm honestly baffled at how lacking the backstory is on this one. It's comedically cliche and lazy writing to just say "Let's have the MC be reincarnated for no reason AND into the body of someone with bizarre, unexplained cross-dressing circumstances AND is in the middle of the specific industry they used to specialize in." I've probably read about 70 chapters at this point and still I have no idea why her family forced her to assume a male identity to the point where her own father thinks she's a gay boy. I was also really thrown off by the term "hacker" and how it was presented in the opening chapters. "He"/She was previously an extremely gifted hacker that broke into gov. mainframes but then spends the vast majority of 150+ chapters being a pro gamer.

Perhaps some of this could be explained by translation issues? I'd hope that's the case. And while I dont recommend this personally, it could resonate more with hardcore gamers, or someone who just wants goofy characters that are basically gay for each other while technically not being gay.

Well, as I keep reading, it's fine.

But some of the side characters and some actions of the male lead, Mr. Qin, did not sit well with me.

1st. There's one side character/mob that took a pic of them without permission and brought trouble just cause "she HAS to take a photo and upload it for all." LIKE, GIRL, YOU DIDN'T ASK THE PEOPLE IN THE PHOTO IF IT'S ALRIGHT. 🤨

2nd. Qin Mo gets too jealous and possessive when they weren't even dating. I mean, he didn't even OPENLY say he likes her when he started getting jealous and getting rid of anyone who Fu Jiu even shows interest in.

He's too controlling with her business/life sometimes. I don't like that.

Other than that, I guess it's alright. Fu Jiu is a nice character and her friends are good too.
