It's a funny manga, no doubt about that. There are a lot of laugh out loud moments, even for someone like me who has tired of most of the comedy manga on the market.
The jokes are generally centered around alcohol and the characters acting like lunatics, often due to alcohol, but they're plenty crazy even without alcohol, especially as the manga progresses. This, coupled with the well-suited art which enhances the experience, makes for a truly amusing ride.
The whole college/university thing is actually minimal, at best we get some crazy scenes where they're screwing with the professor or having to do something ridiculous because of the school(or more like the professor, there's only one professor who actually plays a role and that dude is insane as well). The whole university/college thing is actually just there to give some more plot and characters, like the gang he hangs with at school(who are all pussy-crazy virgins who'd rather screw over their friends when they're trying to get ahead than actually give a honest effort in getting a girlfriend, one actually got a girlfriend but they broke them up because of jealousy, truly a case of "with friends like these, who needs enemies?"😉.
As for the diving group, that's where the real stuff happens. Being completely naked is a common, every-day thing to the point where they start believing it's normal. Being forced to drink and then becoming alcoholics themselves are also another thing. The stuff they drink is also crazy, we're talking about spiritus (96% alcohol) and other extremely high percentage stuff. Things that pretty much evaporate at a visible rate and would actually be lethal poison if drunk undiluted in real life. They're even tricked to drink by being told things are water but it turns out it's vodka or spiritus. So, things like spiritus becomes a standard drink to them, which is pretty sick. They even always keep a lighter on them to make sure that the things they're presented aren't high-percentage alcohol.
I'm also a PADI diver and has been since I was 10, so while the stuff they're talking about and the diving seems kinda lackluster and repetitive for me, I still find it to be funny when they're screwing around with diving trivia, like the guys mistaking particular diving signs for something completely different. Other than that, I don't enjoy the diving scenes at all, for me it just feels unnecessary and like a waste of space. After all, it's much more amazing IRL.
While I do love this manga a lot, it does get increasingly more tiring after more than 10 volumes. The alcohol gag is overused to high heaven since pretty much everything is centered around them being alcoholics prone to undressing. Gags are often repeated, sometimes with slight twists and it really starts to get old after 10+ volumes of the same gag. Yeah, we get it, it's alcohol, it can evaporate, it can burn, it's crazy. We get it already. Just shut up. You get that kind of feeling. Especially in my case since I abstain completely from alcohol and have bad experiences with it, so I can't relate to the alcohol thing as I just think it's stupid to even drink, at least if you can't control it and drinks like these morons, these people are alcoholics to the very bone and should really get professional help if placed in a real world scenario, but I didn't care about that while reading. Then there're the side characters, some of them are quite annoying, especially aina's makeup mode in which she just becomes stupid, hyperactive and violent, even more so after a drink, but there are even more shitty characters around, like sakurako and the other slutty, pretentious, self-absorbed, narcissistic twits who lack respect for anyone and everyone and just wants to f*ck pretty people and crack down on everyone who isn't or doesn't conform to their standards when it comes to hobbies or personality. Even when the author tries to make them into slightly more decent characters, I still find myself hating their guts and wanting them to disappear.
These things knock off 2 points from the score. The longer you read, the lower the score gets so towards the last few chapters I read, I think the score in terms of enjoyment was actually 7/10.
If you can't get enough of insane characters that does crazy shit that would never happen in real life but you kind of wish you could experience, this is probably a great manga for you. It's hilarious, if a bit overdone at times, for sure. Just don't expect anything from the diving or university aspects, they're hardly that relevant. The "sports" tag feels a bit off to me. Although diving can be seen as a sport, it's more a hobby than a sport, especially here. In my honest opinion, to be a sport, there needs to be some kind of a competition or goal clearing and this is indeed possible with scuba diving, especially at more professional levels where you have fun comparing gas levels after a dive or challenge yourselves while diving because just diving alone isn't enough when you get used to it. But, while possible, here they're just diving for fun for a few pages once every few chapters, and the chapters are LONG, the only thing that even came close to competition was when they compared air pressure levels after the dive, which was given about a chapter of time and was more of a silly argument than anything else. They're newbies and they dive without sporting or competition in mind. This isn't a sports manga, don't mistake it for one just because someone decided to tag it as "sports". Even if they did compete actively(they aren't), it still wouldn't qualify as a sports manga because there's simply FAR TOO LITTLE time and too few pages about the activity, along with hardly any information. If you go into this expecting a sports manga, you're going to be severely disappointed. The "sports" tag should be removed. It's misleading and false.
