If it didn't have these creepily young girls in lust with an obviously middle-aged man I wouldn't mind that this has extreme harem subtext.
Who am I kidding. I hate it. These girls do not have external agency. Their entire existences are only there to sigh over MC, be jealous of the other girls and as fan service. Like the vast majority of harem stories these girls are being collected like trophies and Pokemon. They're not characters, just props.
Amazing art but that's a given; it's a manga or amateur comic; doujinshi. The swordfights are thrilling and you can actually see how characters develop.
Back to the CONs though. The notable men are almost always made to be MC's "rival" or look down on him. The one that shows up first, the vice commander, is even dark-skinned. -_- So now we have the stupid and racist "Dark Aggressor" trope in play. As someone with dark skin and having to keep seeing this in BOTH Western and East Asian fiction this is just...so fucking annoying.
This young, dark skinned rival also thinks he's "saving" his Commander from the MC because he's convinced the MC "forced" the Commander to make MC the trainer for this knight force. So conceited.
He never once stopped to think about how his Commander, one of the MC's female students and a very famous, powerful knight in her own right who destroyed every challenger and even seasoned knights to become the commander in the first place, could easily protect herself? This rival is looking down on his powerful commander despite claiming to support her.
Ew.
Of course, only when another man beats him does he respect his female Commander's choice of a trainer. Arrogant. Couldn't just accept her recommendation despite having never beaten her in a dual either, oh, no. He's now all buddy-buddy with the MC.
Also, this reads exactly like how "ugly/plain/untalented women" in romance and shoujo always gets to one-up the beauitful, vivacious, rich bitch girl who tries to put her down. Every story beat is exactly the same and even in the same order of things happening.
It just needs to change gender and the battlefield from a training ground to society in general.
But of course, women fans like me can't point this out. To compare it to women anything is a high sin according to some men and even women.
This dude's male students are never shown in action. Really disappointing on that front but whatever, this is equally obvious that Middle-Aged Sensei is a creator-insert. The artist/writer obviously only wants grossly young women as love interests and as scenery decorations.
I know there are plenty of Korean manhwas with this premise and which does NOT have romance...or at least romance with women that has a gross 20+ age gap difference. I just prefer manga because of the art though. Manga art is almost always superior and more emotional.
