This book was so sweet and so sad in such human ways and I basically wanted to cry through the whole thing with either happy or sad tears. Also the translator did a great job! Some of those lines were just so good!
Yutaka is a 23 year old desk worker at a nebulous company. He was adopted as a young boy into a family with a son and two daughters. Yutaka was deemed “too weird” by the brother in particular and the rest of the family went along with it. He’s used to being alone but is very lonely. He’s good at cooking but can’t eat around others due to anxiety caused by his brother telling him he’s too weird and not fun to be around during meals (or any other time). When the rest of his family invited him to join in, the brother told him not to because he would ruin things. So quiet Yutaka learned it was better for others if he didn’t “intrude.” He’s also sad because he’s always wanted his brother to love him back.
Yutaka meets a four year old boy named Tane and they share a big onigiri together. Eventually Yutaka makes friends with Tane and his older brother Minoru, who is also 23. The two brothers live with their dad at the family ceramic studio. Their mom died two years prior. Yutaka is able to eat around them and teaches them to cook good food, and they start spending every weekend together. Yutaka comes to realize he’s wanted, and relaxes, and loves them both.
Minoru’s mom was always frail, he said. Some of his relatives blamed the fact that she had another baby for her rapid decline in health, and sort of blamed Tane. Minoru responded by keeping his brother closer and loving him deeply. Minoru’s ex-girlfriend also resented that Minoru always brought Tane places with him, so Minoru no longer dates her. In contrast to Yutaka’s brother blaming him for disrupting their family and “forcing” his way in, Minoru ignored the people blaming baby Tane for things and did his best to make sure Tane was loved and safe. He did grow frustrated at times, and he was grieving, and it was his sibling so of course they’re at odds sometimes, but he responded much better than Yutaka’s brother.
Minoru is implied to be bisexual, possibly with a preference for men, and he develops romantic feelings for Yutaka. Yutaka doesn’t realize he feels the same way until Minoru kisses him. Then it takes him a little to be brave enough to tell Minoru he loves him back.
I thought the end was adorable with teenage Tane and the other boys in their 30s now. It was definitely not a surprise when it was implied Tane had an (obviously) unrequited crush on Yutaka, who is his brother’s long term partner. Until he gets over it that poor kid is gonna be a bit bitter he wasn’t born first, lol.
