Description

A spoiled brat from a wealthy Japanese family, Tsuyoshi is unceremoniously shipped off to Korea by his strict grandfather who tells him the family secret — they’re Korean! Sparks fly when the resentful high schooler arrives at the airport and shares an impromptu cab ride with Kang Be-Ri, a plucky girl who happens to be his new neighbor. Will the two ever get past their differences? And will Tsuyoshi learn to accept his new destiny?

One of the better modern shoujo series.

PROS:

The main characters are likable and well-rounded. The leads, especially Tsuyoshi, undergo serious and sustained character development from the first volume to the last.
The series manages to make old devices, like having the male lead's girlfriend come back, work well somehow, when they should be a bit tired and boring.
There are some original and subverting touches, like putting the male lead at a disadvantage rather than the female, and focussing on linguistic and cultural misunderstandings as well as emotional ones.
It's funny. It has its own sense of humour, not a conventional one, but I found it very good.
This series is quite smart by shoujo standards. I learned a bit about Korean-Japanese history; characters have conversations about language, homeopathy and cat health.
The artwork is pretty; the backgrounds in particular are impressive, and a vast improvement over the authors' previous work. Like much manwha, the style is somewhat reminiscent of classic shoujo by Saitou Chiho (note the eyes and restrained use of facefaults), but the youthfulness, thick lines, baggy Korean-teen clothing and pointy chins are all very 21st century. The character designs are lovely; I particularly liked Tsuyoshi's grandfather and Sam-Shik.

CONS:

This series is maybe not very easy for newbies, as a lot of its humour depends on complex linguistic differences. There are notes to explain all of them, but it means that your reaction to jokes may not be immediate.
In contrast to the main characters, many of the intriguing minor ones are underused, like Lee-Yang, whose own background is only referenced once, but never followed up on. The later volumes focus heavily on Be-Ri and Tsuyoshi's relationship. The authors clearly don't like to overcrowd their works and prefer to take a 'narrow and deep' focus, which you may or may not prefer.
Many sidestories are as a result not resolved, at least not in a satisfying way. This can be excused as a typically East Asian way of dealing with them or labelled as an annoying lazy fault. Again, your choice.
The ending is like the 'punchline' of a Monty Python sketch; it's subdued, predictable, and not really the point of the story. The early-to-middle volumes are the best, but all of them are at least mildly entertaining.

OVERALL: It's one of the better modern shoujo series. I loved it and recommend it to any shoujo fan. 8/10
