Bloody Mary (SAMAMIYA Akaza)

Description

Set in Yokohama, this is the story of a vampire with a death wish and a priest with a "survival wish."

After hundreds of years, Mary - an immortal vampire who wants nothing more than to go to his final rest in peace - manages to discover the whereabouts of Maria, a legendary exorcist who has "Maria's Blood," which can be used to kill immortals, running through his veins.

However, this particular Maria is merely a descendent, and is himself clueless about vampire hunting. Despite that, having inherited Maria's Blood means he's constantly being targeted by vampires. Mary thus makes a deal with Maria: in exchange for Maria's discovering a way to kill him, he will protect him from those who are after his life.

This manga, in my opinion, deserves more attention. Whether it's the special bond between the main characters, the captivating supernatural elements, or the stunning art and storytelling, everything about it has made it one of my favorites. Regardless of whether it's a shounen-ai or not, the characters and their contrasting personalities left a lasting impact. I'm so attached that I plan to reread it. However, the ending left me feeling a bit sad; I wish there were more chapters to enjoy.

I strongly believe that anyone who enjoys this genre would find this manga equally captivating and enjoyable.

Good art and decent story telling

This was a decently written story about love and tragedy with vampires. Though at times, the story and characters felt stagnant. It felt as though the plot was relatively complete and satisfying to the end.

Bloody Mary has extremely good art - if the characters are not fighting. It feels like Mary just needs to wave his hand and BAM, a mountain of vampire corpses will appear. But then the focus of Bloody Mary was never about fighting scenes, so I guess I could close an eye on that aspect.

In my opinion, Bloody Mary tries to tell a story about the will to live, the power of love (both familial & romantic love) and the meaning of forgiveness. The manga wants to deliver a profound message - but the confusing storytelling and flat side-characters mess up the process. Basically, everybody leads a tragic, torturous life because they fell in love. And everybody seems to worship or be worshipped by someone else. Characterisation is seriously lacking here, since most characters exist just for the sake of, again, worshipping or being worshipped by someone else. I am not sure if the manga is trying to follow the style of Gothic fiction - but I am sure this method of storytelling and character development (or lack thereof) is not my cup of tea.

That being said, at least the main characters, Bloody and Maria, are likeable and still function with some sort of logic. Their chemistry and occasional moments of fluff are the light that shines through this dark, twisted world of Bloody Mary. (It's not a BL by the way. At most, there are just hints of hints).

All in all, Bloody Mary was an acceptable read - at least the art is supremely well-done. Story-wise, it is not to my liking, but you may find it more satisfying than I did. This is a story about an immortal vampire that wants to die and a mortal priest that wants to live. Give it a shot if you are into vampires, Gothic world-building or BL subtext in a supernatural setting. I reckon you may enjoy it.

I confess I may be biased because I'm not only a fan of this manga, I am on its scanlation team as well but nobody else commented here before, so I'm doing it.

If you expect boy/boy lovey-dovey in this manga (which I've seen many expecting), I've got bad news for you. This manga has ambiguous scenes but isn't a shounen-ai. Even Samamiya Akaza, the mangaka, says so.

If you are interested in the plot, then feel free to read.

This is the story of Bloody Mary, a memoryless vampire who wants to die but can't die (seeing exorcism as the only way to die) and the story of Maria, a priest from an exorcist lineage that keeps getting attacked by vampires, who wants to live. Bloody and Maria make an agreement that Bloody will protect Maria from these vampires who hunt him while Maria looks for a way to exorcise Bloody.

This is a mystery/suspense manga where both future and past gradually unfold at the same time before your eyes and, as the plot unfolds, the characters not only find more about the other, they also learn more about themselves as well and their limited knowledge or new insights on the past determine the choices they make in the future.

This manga follows Samamiya Akaza's way of doing story telling, not to mention its amazing art. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone interested in this manga.
