Tldr: Author wanted romance between the 30 year old and 14 year old child soldier to happen and so they had the sensible partner be brutally raped and traumatized so that she can be sidelined in the story.
Manga and light novels have a reputation about pairing children with grown adults romantically and I thought this was going to be different.
Mainly because the main character saw the child soldiers as his own kids, and because there was another adult woman who was upfront about her feelings with him.
But holy shit was I wrong.
The climax of the third main arc involves a returning character from the first arc, becoming crazy and kidnaps the elf woman to “get back” at the main character since he snapped after finding out that the man responsible for his daughter’s death now works for the mc.
I wish it just ended there, but nope, the elf girl is brutally raped by him. And after everything was resolved I was still holding out hope that maybe it’s not all over yet.
But again, nope. She tot completely sidelined after this. No casca like character development for her. She gets thrown out of the story.
And it’s plain obvious why this happened, the author wanted to push the pairing between the mc and the child soldier. If you read the last chapter it’s pretty blatant considering the two are basically confirmed together.
And it’s just so damn infuriating the way the author went about it. It’s also quite hypocritical of the author to heavily condemn children’s exploitation and then have the main character’s partner be a child.
And you can’t even handwave this by saying that it’s a different time period like in Violet Evergarden. This story is set in the modern times.
So yeah, if you’ve read this far, take the title’s advice and just don’t bother reading it to save yourself from getting brainworms. But if you can ignore everything bad I’ve mentioned, the overall warfare aspect of the story was still very fun.
