Corporate slave gets sort-of reincarnated (walks into a different country/megacity) after dying. He finds himself struggling against a multitude of labyrinths spread across 8 districts, having to start at the bottom and move his way up while attracting various party members throughout his adventures.
There are 3 main things to take away from this LN. The first is that most of it is written as a sort of play-by-play of Atobe's (the MC) day while fighting in labs. At Volume 8, it has been maybe 3 weeks since he started. There's very few stretches of time that aren't covered. Furthermore, it's written with a fair amount of attack does x to opponent y, replete with status effects, attack names, positions, etc. None of this is really a negative in and of itself, but it disregards the concept of a scene entirely. While normally I would be almost completely against it, I believe this is a good example of it working since so much happens in such a short amount of time. There is one caveat that I will get to later though.
Secondly, when not explicitly dungeon diving or managing resources, equipment, items, etc., the only other scenes are...ecchi? There are a ton of comments and observations about breasts. This is important because every other person in his orbit, with few exceptions, are females. All of his party members are all female. Now, it's not exactly overt in perverse thoughts considering our MC is such a standup guy, but the only real other asides in this story are basically semi-lewd comments, bath time, and a remarkable amount of s-stuttering. i-if y-you like a l-lot of s-stuttering, then t-this is t-the LN for y-you. Personally, I just completely ignored it and r-read it as if there were no stuttering, which greatly amplified my e-enjoyment. So it's like 60% straightforward relevant plot, 30% RPG squawk, and 10% awkward animetiddy redfacing and girlie squeals in what can only be described as a genteel, professional harem.
Thirdly is, ofc, the poor writing. I'm not going harp on this too much since LNs are mostly amateur writing but this one hurts because I think it has a lot of potential. There are some very fascinating setups and payoffs; fun and mysterious premises; and quality action scenes that make it stand out in a sea of guilty pleasure slop. It's seriously let down by a few poor decisions. One of which may be the fault of the English translators, but involves having 10 people in a room and failing to explicitly point out who is talking. It's not constant, but it can get very messy. Thankfully there are scant few annoying asides when a conversation is happening, so it's refreshingly terse. Unfortunately, the author mostly forwent establishing setting. That's par for the course in LNs, but he had so much free space to do so, it's a bit of shame he couldn't have thrown a few more sentences together.
Despite it's flaws, it's a fairly safe bet. I thought it was entertaining and would like to have the full series but it's looks as if the author has moved on to other things. Idk if it's outright abandoned, but he's apparently got other projects he's doing. I think that is a true shame because it has a lot of potential that could easily transition to manga and anime. Considering the pace, I would not be surprised if a 1 cour (12 ep) anime series could adapt all 8 novels. At this point, it feels entirely half-way done. Maybe another 9 volumes could complete the series, but who knows when it will ever happen since it's been ~2 years since a new chapter appeared. At least, thankfully, it stops at a good place.
