Description

This is my comment after reading up to chapter 54. The start is pretty cool, but after the second volume, it gets dull pretty quick.

Volume 1 & 2 vague spoilers follow

The island part was nice, learning how to survive, build a shelter, and the struggle with the woman, the rats and the weather.

But when she left him and he left the island for the other island, then arrived in the city, it started to feel drawn out without a purpose. He's left Tokyo now, and at least when he met the two men, there was some story going on, but now they're gone and it feels like aimless wandering/filler.

The content of each couple of chapters is "oh i need water. oh I need food. here's water. here's food." rinse and repeat. His main goal to find his family isn't driving any kind of plot. He's not finding anyone, and certainly no trace of his family.

Chapter 54 is the middle-ish of volume 4. I can not believe this has 4 more volumes of content (Dumbnut said theres about 70 more chapters at chapter 41, meaning 110ish chapters). I hope the pace picks up soon, I think the author has already made his point that there aint no one alive around Tokyo.

I started on this manga this morning, and before I knew it I had read 12 chapters without getting up from my chair. It's about a guy surviving alone in the woods after a big earthquake in Japan. It's drawn in an old, realistic style (e.g., his nose is fully drawn :-). This style is perfect for a story like this, because the guy's situation is deadly serious from the very beginning, and realism in depicting him, his rough surroundings, and his frequent expressions of sadness and terror is just what's needed to put you in his shoes.

If you liked "Dragon Head" you'll probably like this. Ditto if you like to imagine how people lived in the primitive period of our history thousands of years ago. One of the most absorbing things about the story so far is how the main character has to, and does, repeatedly think hard to come up with survival solutions, and how he repeatedly has to struggle to be brave and not give up. This is actually just like adult life routinely is now, but within the world of this manga these struggles are set in a simpler, more basic setting, and with the main character having his life to lose quickly if he screws up!

I've only read 12 chapters. I think it's inevitable that there'll be more characters later. I predict either romance or war!
