When a new girl joins her class, Madoka Kaname thinks she recognizes the mysterious, dark-haired transfer student from one of her dreams. A dream where she is approached by a cat-like creature who offers Madoka an opportunity to change her destiny. Madoka had always thought magic was the stuff of fantasy until she saw the transfer student fighting with the very cat being from her dream. And just like in Madoka’s dream, the cat gives her a choice. Will Madoka become a magical girl in exchange for her dearest desire? What will be the cost of having her wish come true?

This one was somewhat of a letdown personally. I am a lifelong magical girl manga fan, and when this one was new and being well received by many, I thought I would check it out; in short, it wasn't for me. I've always loved the heartwarming stories and silly, joyous fun of magical girl classics like Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura and Wedding Peach, and this one felt the need to turn that on its head within the first book. This series is ground zero for the new school, edgier magical girl stories that abandon character development, fun interactions and relationship dynamics among them and proceed to put all their eggs in the basket of a darker, plot focused style. If that sounds like your thing, more power to you, but magical girl stories are like pop punk music to me, if you make it too serious you're not only missing the bullseye, you're missing the whole dartboard. Maybe I'm a grump, but meh, I like what I like.

Though the art is decent, like a lot of manga based on anime, this was clearly made to bring in the cash. It doesn't add anything to the story, and without the impeccable visuals and music of the anime, you're really cheating yourself of a great experience…

The dark and gruesome mix of shoujo magic girls and horror is somehow satisfying--the author managed to make it work for me.

I was gorging down the chapters one after another nonstop, and finished reading everything in a few hours. I also watched the anime version, which I actually preferred. Anyways, the characters here all encounter HUGE twists that turn their lives into living hell/death. Very interesting read.

I don't know why they even bothered to make a manga.
The anime is of incredible quality, the atmosphere, the ambience, especially in the creepy parts (the worlds of the witches for instance) are ASTONISHINGLY well animated.
SO, watch it. Now.

Faithfully lost potential

The story is really faithful to the original but it REALLY drops the ball when it comes to taking advantage of the manga format. The contrast of everything is too dark compared to the anime, entire fight scenes are scaled back to one or two pages each and the whole story blatantly limits itself to the anime. (12 chapters, 12 episodes)

If you wanted to get into the series, this is a GREAT primer. Especially since you can slowly read and re-read things at your own pace. Otherwise, its nothing you haven't already seen in the anime.

Of course, I have heard of the anime, but have never really seen it. The premise sounds surprisingly deep, and it is not a comedy. These factors will definitely raise this series on my list. Now, if only it were ecchi . . . 😛

Alright, now I loved this anime, but the manga just wasn't the same. They changed a few things and it felt rushed. Also, sometimes it was confusing and even some of the illustrations were hard to follow ( especially volume 3 ) But the storyline was great ( it was the same as the anime ) and I'm pleased to hear that yen is publishing it in English. Hopefully they'll license oriko as well, which was quite good.
