Gotta be honest. It'll annoy you plenty of times. Every criticism thrown at this manga, or most of it anyway, it's true. But like everyone rating this, you will read it all and will have the intense urge to read it all. It's true that the paneling is messy, and the author likes for everyone to say something, so the panels are plenty of times littered with little boxes and dialogue. You can choose to just skim over it, because ultimately it's just that, background people talking a lot, but you will have the urge to read it all. That's the thing with this manga. I think that's the reason it's so famous, and why it has such mixed reviews.
It's not cliché at all, and it deals with a good does of dub-con, though I would never consider rape as a theme, given that Akiyoshi is always clearly in denial. He himself pretends to dislike Fuuta, but the moment Fuuta turns around Akiyoshi is pouty. There are panels showing him mooning or pouting over Fuuta, but he thinks it's not like that. Fuuta is rough, but it's never nothing I don't expect from MEN handling each other. Everytime they are not having sex they have pretty intense conversations, with Akiyoshi pretending to be all annoyed about them.
Is it a manga about love? Who knows, but I personally know it's the kind of manga that will make you despair, facepalm, piss yourself laughing and gasp in suspense. It may have a lot of flaws, but even those flaws are handled in ways you hadn't read in other manga. So I could say that even in the bad, it does remarkably. You might not like it that much at the end, but it will sure leave you an impression. And when you read other manga and find stuff you don't quite like, you will remember Kawaii and Itoshii Akuma and how better they did at the bad, if that makes any sense 😛
