This is one of the favorite works of the founder of Lililicious, who is probably the most knowledgeable person on the subject of yuri in the Western hemisphere, so I was naturally interested. Unfortunately, this painfully melodramatic volume with leave few with emotions other than disappointment.
The plot is so cliched that it feels almost like parody, but it's too excruciating to laugh at. The art is frankly pretty bad, and not because it's outdated. There are rushed, pointy Zip-a-tones everywhere and rather disturbing mistakes in proportion and anatomy.
Yes, it's quite bad, but not bad enough to be so bad it's good, and yet I loved it. I like hackneyed, overdone tragedy and the oh-so-fresh premise of lesbianism in a girls' school (cliche even for Japan in the 1970s). I like flower explosions and bad poetry and unrealistic romances. In fact, Shiroi Heya no Futari is just the sort of manga I like best.
Shiroi Heya no Futari isn't good, whether or not it has classic status, but that classic status is what makes it worth reading. Not many will enjoy it, but the fringe few will adore it. And I'm the fringe few.
