Rating is an 8 at the time of writing 'cos the series is still ongoing but I must say it's the one I look forward to updating the most. After reading Gakuen Alice, it's such a joy to see how Sensei's skills have only improved after all this time.
Champignon no Majo is a whimsical, magical fantasy that examines the life of a poison witch named Luna. The chapters usually focus on one aspect of her world, her feelings, a relationship she had or maybe a new character entirely, but they serve as vignettes into a greater world with a clearly developed lore. I was surprised by how much time was spent examining the magic system and how it effects the characters. While the general vibe is quite cutesy, the subject matter can be unexpectedly mature. I'll just say nobody is safe in this world and leave it at that. The plot is very twisty and turny with plenty of pins stuck in it, so every vignette offers new information that will help you unravel the central mystery (the mystery is how gay sex sentenced you to gay baby jail. no, i'm not joking. yes, i need to know what is going on)
The art is the most immediately stunning aspect... Lots of details, especially in the clothing, with cute creatures (poop worm!!) and a heavy use of effects. Sensei details the outfits she used and their inspirations at the end of each chapter. There's a gargantuan effort put into illustrating the work, so it feels like a shoujo medieval tapestry at times. Actually, it's kind of scary how detailed it all is. Very much made with love!
I can understand why it might not be up to someone's tastes as I don't hear about it much in shoujo circles, but if you love folktales, pretty outfits, whimsy and anguish, then it's the best. Tachibana is quickly becoming a favorite of mine and I'm excited to see where the story goes because by god it is going.
