I don’t understand any of this reviews, because I disagree with everybody else here. I get the deepness people commented in here, but I just don’t agree. And that’s the risk with love triangles, that you can disagree with the author’s choice and that alone f*cks things up for you. And that’s why I have to say I don’t like this.
First thought: WOW! The art is so pretty!
But I don’t like any of the characters except for Nanno. That’s not necessarily bad, it’s just a statement; they are well developed, I just don’t like them. Both Makoto and Ryou are pathetic in their own ways. I really get turned off when the seme is someone else’s uke, which seems to be Makoto’s case…He is sensei’s uke. And he’s not the playboy that makes us see him as sexy and desirable. He’s the spoiled one who keeps feeling sorry for himself and does nothing to change.
Ryou at first just irritated me for being too plain, so I didn’t get the fuss over him. Even though I get that he was confused, he seemed dumb, like he could be played around by anybody who tried, be it Makoto or Nanno and a third guy if there ever was one. But at some point he really pissed me off. He slept with Nanno and then started getting jealous of him because Makoto still cared for him as a friend?! Then all that talk about “oh, Makoto-san, but you have to think about Nanno-san’s feelings too” was just lies?! How can Makoto say, later on, that Ryou is “considerate to others”?! I began hating him.
Nanno, though, I like, even though most people probably hate him. I like well-constructed characters, even if they’re an obstacle to the main couple, and he’s such. He’s really smart. Since he can’t have Makoto, he turns Ryou’s life into a mess to make things difficult for Makoto. Maybe he didn’t even knew Makoto liked Ryou too, but he made sure to complicate things between them, getting involved the only way he could, which was through the weaker link, Ryou. Also, I feel sorry for him, so I sympathize with him.
Oh, and I LOVE Harii-san! He’s so funny!
What I did like about this was the pace. The timing is very good, as time goes by slowly, the way it’s supposed to. They spend a long time on this game, not just a week like some manga out there.
I also like how realistic this manga is at parts – and notice the at parts. Ryou actually cares about what being gay might mean to him or to the world, differing from most mangas out there.
I like that they solve the problems like mature, grown up man, like it should be. That’s a step closer to reality, too. And they actually manage to stay friends.
But I have to say I didn’t like it, over all. And not because of the construction. It’s actually really good. I just liked Makoto x Nanno better than Makoto x Ryou, which isn’t much of a positive thing, when the main character is Ryou. I just think Nanno’s story is so much cutter… A story generally only has effect when something changes from the point where it begins to the point where it ends. The problem with this one is that Ryou came and screw things. Yes, maybe Makoto never would’ve realized Nanno loved him and that he loved Nanno back, but then again, it was too late to realize it anyway, the way it went. Ryou was the cause of a sad ending to what could’ve been a beautiful, mutual-loving relationship. And Nanno didn’t even get a proper ending, since I hate how he kinda ended up with the painter.
