Description

The fantasy manga takes place in the past - in a world where gods, spirits and humans live together peacefully. The main characters are the SHIKIGAMI, gods who rule over the four seasons in general and AKIGAMI, the god of autumn, in particular. Akigami is the black sheep of the seasons, so to speak, because he defiantly ignores the supreme law for gods and spirits, which forbids them any contact with mortals. As a consequence, Akigami is cast out by gods, spirits and even his servants.

The story is about a young tengu named Kureha. He is an outsider and both tengus and humans hate him because of his bold behavior and unknown parentage. Nonetheless, the current god of the autumn mountain ("Akigami" = God of autumn) makes him take his place. After that it is described how Kureha masters his tasks despite being looked down upon.
The story is very interesting, however very complex. It felt like it needed at least two volumes more to be properly explained if not more. It focuses on why Kureha became the Akigami but leaves out many many other interesting parts. The connection between the different season mountains is still unclear to me. Actually I didn't understand at all how they work. Do they work all at the same time? But that's not how seasons work, right? Then suddenly more gods are introduced, like the God of the sun, God of the rain etc., and I just accepted it as is.
The characters designs are all very unique. Though most of them lack depth in personality or are just way too hard to understand (which would've been solved if the story were longer I think). For example Sekiei, the Oni granddaughter, looks as if she were aroused nonstop. Her behavior was also way beyond crazy and in the end, I was happy not having to see her longer than one chapter. I'm glad that the main character looks cool AND is likeable though.
The art is quite nice. It looks a bit "rough" which I like. It's typical for Shounen I think.
I guess I'll read it once again since I bought a copy anyway. Maybe things will get clearer when reading it a second time.
All in all, it's an okay manga. The story has lots of potential, but it didn't fit in solely 8 chapters. It's a nice read but be prepared for a few question marks over your head.
