Description

Ukai Rei (aka Zero, which is Rei in Japanese) saves three troubled teens from a Suicide Website, and together they choose to work as modern-day 'Robin Hoods' of society. However, Rei's friends are caught by an underworld gang whose heist the group had foiled. In order to rescue them, Rei is forced to enter a gambling competition hosted by a rich, rotten old man who is looking for a talented gambler to be his rep player in an upcoming gambling tournament for millionaires from all over the world. The reward money? 100 BILLION YEN.

One of the best in the "geniuses vs. evil private game shows" sub-sub-genre. Fukumoto's trusty themes (daring leads, powerful yakuza, a very minimal sprinkling of women, intense cerebral gambling with imaginary game variants and brutally violent consequences) find a good home in shounen.

The Zero series rules. The hero has to parley and contend with a whole crowd of trapped normals, like Kaiji's first game and... all the games in Liar Game. Not only is someone always a misstep away from being mutilated or dying, the cruel and cartoonish sideshows have time limits! The solutions and bluffs are ridiculous. It feels like watching a world record speedrun of a video game made by Kazuya.

The first episode of Zero is the most exciting, but the second is full of memorable moments, and it sets things up for the third to be an absolute knockout.

Fukumoto is truly a brilliant author. I enjoyed the gambles in this story tremendously. Not a 10/10, however, for the strange way this Part 1 of the story ends. The whole story was about luck not playing a role, and then to have something like that happen... It's not like this inversion makes no sense at all, but I still didn't like it.

Has a Sequel! so its not really an ending

It ends at a cliffhanger! So there's a sequel to it... I dint knw that b4 I started, so I now have to read d sequel too
The story's good so I dont mind, but I cant say d same abt the art... Its not bad, just old n not pretty...

Also, its really weird that there wasn't a single female character in this entire manga!! 😀

Entrancing

Although not as dark as Kaiji and Akagi (it is a shounen after all), his other known works , this doesn't make it bad. In fact, it is still brilliant. It's quite relieving actually to read a Fukumoto manga without the complexies of mahjong in it. All the games are simple and easy to understand with the catch that it's actually not fair and that it's a gamble with your life of course.

You like gambling? You like psychological games? You like lies, deceit, and trickery? This is your manga.

Nowhere near Kaiji...

It's a shounen to the core.Characters don't have the same reasons for gambling as in Kaiji.They are just greedy,so the manga won't draw your attention with the psychological issues.Also the riddles are stupid which are based on mathematical issues of a 2nd year middle school kid.I would personally prefer Fukumoto to end this manga as soon possible so as to work more on Kaiji.

Not at all original, since this could've easily just been an arc of Kaiji. Zero even resembles a younger, less desperate Kaiji. But if you like Fukumoto's mind games, and puzzles, you'll most likely enjoy it. Keep in mind that this ran in a shounen magazine, though. I've only read 3 volumes, but it might be a tad less hard-boiled.

Gambling!

Fukumoto Nobuyuki does it again, this time with a more gambling related theme. To those new to this author, the art might just look bad and ugly, but if you like the psychological aspect of gambling you might still like it. If you had already read some other Fukumoto's manga, and liked it, it's almost a must read.
