Coming from the author who wrote The Gamer, I expected this to squander its potential as well. Having read The Gamer over a year and a half ago, I really did enjoy it. However, it ended up going down hill. While the author having no overall direction for that series, it still had some enjoyability to it. Now I'm not sure of its current status since I haven't read it in a while, but with Life Howling it seems he is trying to establish a Universe which he will write his manhwas in. There are a few Easter eggs within Life Howling that lead to this conclusion.
On to Life Howling.
What makes this interesting is that it has combined RPG mechanics with a survival story. The RPG idea has been done before, but not like this. The MC is forced into a different world where he has to kill monsters and grind points to level up and survive. Everytime he goes to the different world he has a mission he must complete to return back home. A good thing about it is he isn't a lone wolf this time. He has supporting characters with him who are also progressing, albeit the story focuses mainly on the MC. As far as tension goes, the MC isn't OP, but he is strong. Meaning there are times where he needs to rely on his party or others to get out of the situation alive.
The story is always moving along, currently we are in the early stages of the story where he is slowly learning about everything around him. Plus his progression is fun to see. With forced survival missions it is always keeping the MC active and moving, meaning we aren't going to have as much stagnation like The Gamer.
Three problems one might have with the series overall are, 1). The female character isn't getting as much focus even though we have some characterization for her she isn't as active as the MC. So they need to give more focus to other characters to create more of a dynamic than just one guy. 2). While not the biggest problem for me, but it can affect others, is the art work. It is very minimalistic and has close to no detail as far as backgrounds go. I do think the character drawings can look pretty good, and the action scenes are good enough. 3). The story is just getting started, so they are currently building up the plot it seems. As of now he is just learning, so don't go in this expecting a heavy plot thriller. Currently its all about fighting monsters to survive, and getting stronger using the points you receive from killing them.
Tl;dr - Rpg Survival with grinding and life and death situations. That is currently in the stage of world building and getting stronger.
