The whole manga its self was really good but the story I feel gets stretched out far. I think if a few chapters got combined then it would be better. The ending was the part of the story I really have a problem with. It is one of the most worst/unsatisfying endings I've ever read (and that's saying something). But otherwise this series is nice. Honestly I think it needs another season but its been years since the end date so I don't think it will happen.
Overall rating 8/10
The kids are adorable yet strong in their own ways. Each presents their own unique aspect of comedy to the mix, and each as their own dynamic with Mr. Kwon. Mr. Kwon himself is also a fascinating character, and his story is both heart-wrenching and heart-warming.
It's a lovely webtoon with a good bit of humor to liven it up.
This series started out very strong. Every member of the small cast received quite a bit of characterization, the story moved at a good pace, and the author used the medium of manhwa to great effect (with respect to pacing, panels, etc.).
But after the first ~30 chapters, the pacing gets pretty thrown off (maybe due to the health issues mentioned in a few author's notes) and it often feels rushed, with jarring transitions between scenes, choppy action scenes due to not enough panels, etc.
The major plot thread also suffers from some bizarre issues. Nothing about that plotline makes sense if you assume that even semi-competent police exist. For instance, there were ~5 kidnapping attempts by the same guy on the same target, most of them in open daylight (and several with advance warning of the "I'll kidnap your son" variety), and yet both police and bodyguards prove absolutely useless (?!?). That threw my suspension of disbelief entirely out the window. The main antagonist also has absurd plot armor, somehow escaping unscathed every time (once, the MC beats him almost unconscious with the police close by, and he still escapes somehow, wtf). And even though the protagonist is depicted as pretty unbeatable in fights, in front of the villain he somehow becomes a punching bag each time (e.g. c49, c80).
Finally, the ending itself is abrupt and a bit of a letdown, managing to be even more rushed than the main storyline.
In conclusion, I wish I could've read the manhwa the first ~30 chapters promised it to be, rather than the one it turned out to be :/.
I've been following this manhwa since 2015 but since it's recently been picked up again, I decided to finally leave a comment!
The Children's Teacher Mr. Kwon is probably in my top five manga/manhwa ever, and I've read a lot of manga. It's a perfect blend of slice of life comedy, tragedy, and gritty mob action that'll have your stomach aching from equal parts laughing and crying. Just like Kwon Ha stealthily warms the hearts and changes the lives of his students, Ho Woo weaves sympathetic characters with complex backgrounds that find a place in your heart before you even realize it. The art is simple but emotive, the action scenes are intense and colorful, and the storyline is engaging and full of well-placed twists. The dialogue as well is witty and unexpectedly thoughtful- they're universally relatable messages about friendship, family, and letting go.
This is a must-read manhwa- I've read it at least five times over while waiting for a new scanlator team to pick it up, and I'll probably read it at least five times more once it's completed.
Edit: So the scanlation is finally complete and, par for the course, I bawled my eyes out at the conclusion. A lot of people complain that it was rushed, that it left loose ends, that it was unsatisfying, but I disagree. An open ending fits the series so well, because the entire story followed Kwon Ha as he struggles to reconcile who he really wants to be- a teacher- with who he has become- a high-ranking mobster. The series concludes with Kwon Ha coming to terms with
his father's death, leaving the mob, and realizing that he is still worthy of becoming a teacher. That for a while, he has been a real teacher. Even as he comes to this realization, the closure of the school signifies the end of Kwon and the children's time together, and forces them to move on. It's a bittersweet ending that may not feel 100% satisfying because the series has never been about fluff and frolicking in a perfect, fair world. ! That's why the series concluded with Kwon and San left far from unscathed from their final encounter with Bokil Pi. That's why there was no touching reunion between Kwon Ha and his college sweetheart. That's why Kwon Ha's father was murdered in the first place. The series is about coming to terms with the fact that reality is brutally unfair to even the kindest of people and all we can do is to treasure the time we have with those we hold dear, in moments of joy and despair alike, so when the time inevitably comes to part ways, we do so with heavy but full hearts, knowing we made the best of what we had.
The series concludes with a new beginning, and I can't think of a better way to conclude a series about love, loss, starts and, yes, ends.
This webtoon is ONE , GREAT , SMASHING MASTERPIECE . Let me clarify before that I'm not at all sentimental but this webtoon made some weee-little salt water come to my eyes. It's heartwarming , it touches you down to the depths ....one word- awesome. The characters are very well presented- not the type that are just two-dimensional but the type that makes you sympathize with them . Mr. Kwon himself is too great. And did I mention the no. of times I wanted to hug Cha Shiru. Omg that lil boy is so cute.
Definitely recommended.
At the same time your laughing with the happenings, it turns out sad and you're on the edge of crying (actually I did cry once) or some really sweet situation appears and you have that fool smile in your face...
This webtoon is totally loveable, it's a cute and sweet slice of life that you can't stop reading till the last chapter updated.
It's only a pity that SCS had to drop this series, but I hope we can read it again soon
As the other comments have already stated, it is a really underrated webcomic! It is pretty damn cute as well. This webcomic is about a Teacher(who is hinted to be a former gangster) who teaches at a rural countryside town elementary/primary school. The five students are really energetic and very likable in this webcomic. I would recommend this webcomic if you are looking for a good, slice of life manhwa/webcomic that does not focus on highschool students/romance and such.
It's surreal, sometimes it's funny and sometimes it's serious.
It takes a lot for media to get emotion out of me, and this manhwa brought me to tears with one chapter.
It's sweet and a joy to read.
Really quite the underrated webcomic. I'm in love with it right now. I wait at the edge of my seat for it to be updated like, every hour. That might just be me, though. But I do love this one. It's unique. It's funny.
It's sad.
Truly, it's fabulous 🙂
It's very unfortunate that this manga is yet not known by many because it is a very lovely and fun manga to read. Any lucky out there who happens to stumble over this manga, give it a try. I'm sure you'd like it as it's very interesting to read 😉
