37 Volumes (Complete)

Yes, it is a shounen. That can be seen miles away. There's friendship speeches, fights, fanservice (for both girls and guys), and the like. But it's a very good shounen.
A story based on the same book as Disney's -Aladdin- (but nothing like either), Magi sets in a wonderful Arabic setting filled with magic, mystery, djinns (genies), flying carpets, good vs. evil, powerful kings and generals, and much more. It's a fantasy world that makes one want to fly around on a turban and see the world.
There's character development, plot progression, and steady growth of power. The main guy will obviously be the most powerful, but he isn't there yet, and he doesn't get there by random means. He is helped by those around him to defeat stronger enemies, and he grows in power. Same goes for the other characters.
There are very strong moral issues raised in the manga, that, while dealing with the content of the story, portray real life. The whole magical vs. normal power is reminiscent of technology vs. "the good old days" views. As someone else mentioned, issues like slavery, crazy families, abuse of power, manipulation, and all sorts of things in the manga are very real issues in our world. It makes the manga interesting and different than mainstream shounen -- but of course, it's not mainstream.
And, of course, one of the most important aspects of any manga (IMO): the comedy -- it's really great! Some parts had me rolling.
Edit: Dropped the series, despite my raving review. The arcs were becoming extremely long and I did not care for the ridiculously drawn-out flashback arc. Humor was almost non-existent during the long battles and convoluted drama. Still, the manga is definitely a work of art.
I like this manga. It is different compared to other hit shounen like Bleach, fairy tail and naruto in many aspects. Although I read the first 2 since I have been reading them from beginning. I can say Magi is certainly different. The first thing about Magi that is different is the reason for their fight, unlike those 2 above (dunno about naruto) which has competitive fights which cannot really be comprehended along with their regular power ups in every arc with more stronger opponents magi is much more reality based in its characters and I hope it sticks to that in future. It shows the dark sides of human like greed for money and power, jealousy, inferiority complex, frustration over social standings....etc. which leads them to do bad things and as a whole puts most antagonist characters in grey area. War, Conquest, slave trading...these where things which actually happened in history of the real world and still happens. Yes it has morality speeches like other shounen but then again it is a fact that without morality there will be riot.
Secondly the characters are not overpowered and I hope they remain like that. For example the use of magoi by finalis is limited and magicians has weak physical defence these resemble more like RPG games. so ppl who compare this to FT are certainly wrong. I just hope this doesn't go with asspull powerups in the future.
Solomon's wisidom which is a power of omniscience is powerful enough. Although Aladdin haven't really mastered it yet. I only hope he is able to refine that and not any other new power in future
I think the reviewer below me, Davion X, is mistaken something. Both Hunter x Hunter and FMA Brotherhood are quite brutal but very popular. It's not good to judge every shonen manga based on Naruto, One Piece or Fairy Tail.
Magi is a unique manga, make no mistake. It has many lighthearted moments and comedy with lots of action but it also isn't afraid to show the dark side of humanity and fierce fights. Unlike some generic shonen manga out there where the protagonist keeps shouting "friendship" and "no killing", this manga gives a fresh breath of air where one of the protagonists dares to commit a crime, but not without a moral lesson for the readers. Hate will only give birth to another hate.
The Magi world is vast and it has many memorable characters with their own good and bad sides. Fascinatingly, they all stay in gray area where neither of them is completely right nor wrong. What once started from a cheerful journey, turns really big and deep. If you like a manga with a long journey of action, comedy, magic fight, adventure, tragedy and a big revelation in the end, you will surely enjoy this manga. Just keep in mind that the dungeon conquering thingy will only happen at the first few chapters. After that is a full-blown adventures in many countries of Magi.
I'll give this manga a proper rating once it's finished.
I think the author reads too much horror mangas lately. The drawings changed slightly and also - this gory scenes. It's not good direction for this manga, it could be (and partially is) a shounen hit like Naruto/Fairy Tail etc. but if it will go like that, well.. it's not shounen manga anymore. (I liked Magi for being "light" and fun manga)
This manga is amazing. At first it looks like typical manga, where you will conquer everything, in this case, "dungeon". But, after the first dungeon, that is the beginning of the story. You should not comment about this manga until that part. Especially because of annoying alladin and the ladies part, it's just a little joke.
This manga full of everything. Moral, intrigue, action, and everything. Recommended.
I always wanted to read this sort of manga. To dream about a world full of magic and wonders, always makes me feel happy. Besides the quality and character development in Magi are also awesome.
I watch anime and I just love it decided to take a chance to read manga but I see they hurry up in anime doesn't same manga and little change any way I like all arabic details and art with colors * I'm jealous of those who have the time to read magi and dream about it*-__-
So "wotonito" said epic word " something along the lines of "... Miraculously no one died." Wow the friend of Ali Baba, Kasim is truly died. Are you truly read this Manga. Its not plot-less like Fairy Tail, its all about morality. Yes its truly Shounen cliche with moral bullshit, If you don't like this read Gantz, Berserk, or any other seinen instead. Its more feels good than any other shounen bullshit out there. Face it this is shounen there's a moral obligations for Author to give something like morality, friendship, etc unto the story. And this Magi - Labyrinth of Magic is one of the good shounen with good plot not just battling and reup like any other shounen out there. And please dont be so annoying little child commenting without reading. I will not rate this until the story is End. And i believe the Author will gave me more great reading than any other shounen especially 3 bullshit shounen you little kid love.... :p
The storytelling and character development in this manga are closer to seinen than shounen imo. Anyone thinking that this manga is even close to trash like Fairy Tail, Bleach or Naruto (when every fight is a OHKO for the hero after cliche nakama speach & asspull power up) is beyond me.
Different from said manga, in this one, the protagonists actually lose, they're humble enough to realize their weakness, and actually try to stop and think about strategy instead of just rushing in like an idiot (aka. Natsu). The fight are more believable (at least the mangaka try to put some logic behind magic, weakness, reason to lose, etc.), unlike nakama shit from Fairy Fail. Even the supposedly cliche speech seem less cliche thanks to great artstyle effect and convincing character's motive (the last conversation between Alibaba and Kashim was well executed for example)
While this manga still carries some straits from typical shounen (friendship stuffs & perverted protagonist), it can still provide a deep plot with ambiguous & vulnerable characters that readers cannot simply tell if they're good or evil (basing on the latest chapters). Again, completely different from typical shounen where villains appear one after another (most are just want to destroy the world for no freaking reason) just to get trashed by the main character after bullshit power up and cliche speech.
A definitely recommended read.
This story feels kind of like Fairy Tail to me. By that I mean that it just lacks suspense, hardly anything ends badly. Every single fight ends with something along the lines of "... Miraculously no one died." Like, more people die in this story (Either in flashbacks or otherwise unimportant characters) than Fairy Tail (one random dude no one cared about) so it does have a tiny amount of suspense, but that's it. I have actually started to HOPE for the antagonists to win just because I'm getting annoyed at everything being A.O.K. at the end. Oh, Mr. Antagonist is about to die? SAVE HIS ASS! Freaking annoying.
