Description

My all-time favorite mangaka

The very first yaoi manga I fell in love with was Love Mode by Shimizu Yuki. Since then, I've read several others of her work and I fell in love with them all, especially the longer series like Ze and Kachou Fuugetsu. I love everything about her work -- the art, the story, the setting, the pacing... everything. Well, I admit maybe I'm biased. But whatever. I love them all. Ze is perfect in my book. And Asari... I fell for you the first time I laid eyes on you (or more specifically, the fox mask lol). What an unforgettable character.

Note: I find that the very first couples in the serials mentioned above are usually weaker than the rest (but I have a soft spot for Takamiya x Izumi from Love Mode) but they're all enough to draw me in further into the story. For me, I realized this situation only after finishing the series, so I don't think it matters a whole lot. So please give this and the rest of sensei's book a read!

Yaoi as it should be, nice and long.

Genma x Himi (infinite sex and angst couple; if I understand correctly, he is an illegimate child of Mitou family, son of Mitou Seima and Yashiro woman, so he uses his mother surname, so he is knkws as Yashiro Genma... Himi previously belonged to his father...)

And the final story, Waki Arc... There was Mitou Riikichi, he has a little sister called Uta and daughter Yukino. He had a wife Momoyo who died early. And so, Waki got picked up by Riikichi and healed Uta's face... Basically Waki was a human trash with mysterious longevity... Then he befriended a wolf, but wolf got killed, then Waki got suicidal, and then Rikiichi happened. Rikiichi's dolls were Asari, Konoe and Magane. Uta's doll was Shirahase. Magane was a wolfboy and Waki's love interest - however there was an enormous romantic tention between Waki and Rikiichi. Then, the two Endou brothers happened: Takamitsu and Hozumi. Hazumi married Uta, they had a baby - Shoui. Yukino married Takamitsu (quite dominant wife), gave birth to Kotoha and adopted Shoui. And... Well, this yaoi was a long journey, a great one but ending left me slighly unsatisfied. But if I don't rate Ze 10/10, what else can be rated that way?

Ugh...what a waste of time

I won't go into details, but one story arc completely ruined the manga: it is basically the story of a rich, impulsive rapist and his victim, a living paper doll. Glorifying rape in any way or form is simply disgusting. This manga not only makes no logical sense, but also roots for the main character, who is a terrifying man lusting after his slave.

Morals got cast out the window here.

That aside, the characterization of each person also sucked. I saw little character development, and the past arcs are not fully explored. Very disappointing. The only somewhat interesting aspect was the premise of paper dolls who loyally served their masters.

Good yaoi

The first couple of chapters, as well as the first couple, are pretty flat.

But then you get to the rest of the couples, and it's so good. You get good art, good smut, and an actual unique STORY behind every couple! Each story is very touching, sad, and sweet; I would've enjoyed them even without the smex. Not to mention, having the series end with Waki's story was very fitting and sad.

Why can't I like it?

This is quite a popular yaoi but for some reason I just cannot get myself to like the characters. I cannot quite put my finger on the reason, but I dislike the character portrayals. How can I feel anything if the partners are paper puppets?

I loved this manga, so good. But seriously, it has some of the worst introductions to new character arcs I have ever seen. It's almost impressive. But like I said, great manga. Definitely will pick this up again for a reread. The reason it's not getting the 0.5 is obviously for the introductions, but also for the very yaoi concept that younger/smaller/thinner makes the uke, while bigger/older makes the seme. It's a long way into the manga before that "yaoi rule" is broken. But when it is broken, it's still not really... And my top issue, if you can call it that, is

Where is the yuri story arc? I know this is yaoi and all, but seriously, if you introduce a lesbian couple, and you have EVERY OTHER person's story arc that visited that house in here, why the F* isn't theirs in? It's the only arc that is missing! In the beginning we see like 2-3 sex scenes with them, then they sort of just appear randomly, and then they are not heard of again. They have no "how they met"-arc, they have no "(happy) ending"-arc. Nothing. Practically no story arcs at all.

At the beginning, I got a little confused since I'm not really into supernatural stories, but the more I read it, the more it becomes interesting. The author really put effort into the story line, and I'm glad I gave it a chance. I give it 9 instead of 10 because it couldn't give me a heartache lol but really, it's recommended.

Shimizu Yuki-sensei did it again

With this series I think it is quite visible to see how the mangaka had improved even further from her Love Mode days, both in the artwork/character designs as well as story structure/story-telling. The system of multiple couples is still used, though to an even smarter level imo; I've seen some complain about the 'confusing' lateral interactions between the couples and the large amounts of flashbacks, but for me more than anything they provide for a much more intricate and intriguing read than your normal straightforward stories. Also, this time I pretty much like all of the characters even if some may be more to my liking than others; which is different from Love mode where it's admittedly hard to get into the story with the first couple, and along the way there are some characters a bit hard to sympathise with. This is not the case with Ze at all, making me even more indulged in the manga. And the artwork like I mentioned is more sublime than ever for sensei. Overall a very good series; I recommend anyone old and new to BL alike to give this a try and not be discouraged with the number of volumes.

First of all ZE has an interesting concept regarding the kotodama and shikigami. Then it offers a solid storyline, developed characters and well-running plot, executed in a very pleasing enchanting art. The kind that left you longing for more and linger in your mind for days..

Flaws? Back and forth time-line, undeveloped few characters as though they are just space fillers..

This gem, even if the sex scene is omitted and goes work-safe, I believe it still has the charm to engage the reader.

This is one of the best BL manga I've ever read. All the characters have dept and motive and each of their story are interesting enough to keep me at the edge of my seat. Shimizu Yuki really know how to use her characters to push the story forward. She use her established protagonist to build on the new protagonist's story, leading to a new and richer story line. By doing this you will already know most of the characters before their story even start and that will make reading it all the more enjoyable.
