Too unrealistic...I can't believe the main character is still wearing her school uniform for over 15 chapters (I skipped ahead and checked) and nobody cares.

This is taken from the mangaka's notes in the 1st volume: She wanted to write a fun, entertaining story and decided on Sengoku Jidai as the setting. She originally wanted Nobunaga as the main character but because she didn't think she could properly write from the perspective of a genius, she decided to go with a schoolgirl as the MC because she likes school uniforms. Simple as that.

Once you know that, things make more sense about this series. It doesn't attempt to seriously tackle the questions about time travel and its ramifications. You have to understand that Kasane is not going to be the driving force of the story. Kasane for the most part rides along the events that happen to her, and we're clearly expected to do the same. She's there to be the accessible viewpoint into this world, and not to be the center of the story. I do think it's a shame, especially because the beginning made it seem like she'd more important. It would have been a more stronger, more interesting story had the mangaka went for more realism and a greater focus on our heroine. A gritty struggle of a young woman trying survive in the past! How interesting would that have been! Still, she's a little miss badass and this is a fun manga with very nice art.

If you'd like to read a more serious take on the "modern person time travels and ends up meeting Oda Nobunaga" premise, I suggest Nobunaga no Chef.

How the **** does this pass as shounen??

Despite being a girl, I'm not a big fan of shoujo manga and this series seems to have all the things that irritate me. I can't take this sugar coated scenario where your typical relatable high school girl goes back in time and is almost instantly surrounded by beautiful boys who accept her for no legitimate reason and 'oh no, the boss is dislikes and is mean to me but somehow comes to accept me'.

Come on, i thought this was supposed to be an action shounen series, not some shameless shoujo reverse harem! Give the b**** some hardship, make her legitimately work to gain acceptance, they're all way to nice to her. She's allowed to be a fighter, yet treat her like a female and let her wear weird female clothes? Let her talk back to her superiors? You're supposed to be sengoku era samurai, grow some balls and learn some era appropriate sexism for christ's sake! Even a boy wouldn't be treated so nicely. I hate hate hate it when worthless (imo) MCs are given sugary special treatment.

Some people may like the liberties taken on the characters but they bother me. How can you portray Nobunaga being some jerk but decent guy bishounen? He was terrible to his retainers and worse to the common people, not to mention absolutely fugly.

A half assed history lesson

There isn't much happening beyond one battle after the other. It feels like the author is trying to teach us history while giving credit to major historical events to the shoujo-esque encouragement of a 16 year old modern teen. Rubbish. Least they can do is create a plot where she does more than spout idealistic bullshit. This would have been a fine manga if it was the more gritty, serious type. But it feels like a shoujo where the sole purpose is romance, yet there is none of that. All in all art is really good but the story fails.

Irrelevant premise, generic plot.

In line with some of the previous sentiments, I had high expectations for this from the first chapter.

But really, the initial premise is moot in this case. The main character's time traveling is quickly glossed over and somehow easily accepted (she goes around everywhere in a school uniform for christ's sake). The world she is transported to, while in a state of war, doesn't even feel nearly as grim as it should be. Things still feel happy-go-lucky, and to me the main character is unrealistically adaptive to everything. I would have expected a bit more of a shock factor. Why even put in the time travelling stuff? The direction the manga went in could have easily been done without the time travel. The initial premise is completely irrelevant.

Furthermore, the story doesn't even really focus on Kasane's struggles. It's really based more on "politics" and "war". This means generic battle after battle, while our "main character" acts mainly as a tag-along. And did I mention nearly all the characters feel flat, one dimensional, and boring?

A Must Read

My first impression of 'Sengoku Strays' was that of a stereo-typical manga with a time travelling female lead who would struggle to find her way back to the present time. But, after reading the first few chapters, I realized that, that was not the case at all. The female lead is surprisingly 'manly' in a feminine way, strong willed and is quick in accepting her fate being in the Sengoku Period (Warring Period of Japan). She is clearly reliable and she doesn't need any unnecessary help from the other male protagonists unlike the female leads from other mangas alike such as Harukanaru Toki No Naka De Hachiyosho, where the female lead's 'celestial gift' depicts her as something that needs to be protected dearly for the sake of Japan. For 'Sengoku Strays', the female lead uses her head, listens to orders and not only protects herself but also prioritize the safety of people around her.
No romance? That is not a surprise. This manga is clearly categorized under shounen. But that what makes it different from other mangas which are similar. If this was a shoujo, do you really think that the heroine would be able to walk about and act like a male herself? Join in wars like how a female lead of historical manga should? No. If 'Sengoku Strays' was a shoujo, the male leads would obviously protect and prevent her from even lifting a katana. Whats more, if 'Sengoku Strays' was a shoujo, it will be completely cliche not to mention boring. The Mangaka would have obviously created a much more hopeless type of heroine. Tied down to house chores and waiting at the fort while the others battle out at the war grounds. The whole point of her being there will quickly divert into something else.
Due to Kasane's unyielding resolution, and also her initiative in taking part in action is one of the reasons why I keep on reading the series.
Other than that, I enjoyed this manga all the same because of the Mangaka's art and I loved her impressions of the warriors from the 'Sengoku Period'. They were just like how they should be.

The art is awesome, and there's nothing to say about it but, simpleness makes it beautiful. Nobunaga is so cool!! Right now, I've only one thing to say...I really really hope for some romance, just a little bittle bit :-) I was like: What ? Nobunaga has a wife already? Nouhime?, when she suddenly came into the picture.

Similar to kichiX, I also thought this was going to be a keeper from the beginning. The mangaka presents a strong female lead, the historical time-travel, and also a hint of hardship.

The main character being beaten down and kidnapped in a foreign world

You get invested wondering what could possibly happen next and then the mangaka hands you sugar, spice and everything nice. The battles are simplified, the characters simpler, and the matter of the main character wearing her school uniform is easily glossed over. Forget the technology, techniques and material needed to make that type of clothing and think of the fact that she's wearing nothing but that in times of war and assassination. It was simply a bit too much for me.

To Clear Something Up

I haven't read the whole manga yet, but what I have read so far if absolutely phenomenal! I have read many manga about a heroine who can actually hold her own right from the start, it is quite refreshing and the fact that it is not so heavily based on a romance between the heroine and the main hero is also a refreshing change of pace for me. However, where ever I go to read comments about this manga, at least one person is complaining about Kasane always wearing her school uniform and why she doesn't wear something appropriate for that time period so she blends in. Well, the answer lies within Kasane. Kasane mentions on many occasions in the first four to five chapters that she plans to find a way home, so, I believe the author protrays Kasane's determination to return home by having her wear her uniform. It's like a reminder that Kasane won't give up trying to get home to her brothers.
All in all, this managa is very good and I intend on reading to the end, and I recommend others read this as well.

A "sugar-coated" shounen

For shoujo, in my opinion, there are two types. The sugary, glittery type which romanticises everything then the not so sugary, grittier "real-life" shoujo. It seems there is a similar division in shounen.
When I first started this I had high expectations, the first chapter was amazing and the characters were all good. However, this is unmistakenly a "sugary" shounen. The main character is still in her school uniform after being there for days; surely you would want to change to try and blend in. She's acting, and they're acting like it's the 21st century when in actual fact its the 16th. Sure, there were fights but it all seemed really sugar-coated. I may seem picky, and it wouldn't have been so bad if that was what I was expecting when I picked this up, but I was looking for something more true-to-life (as much as manga can be) and grittier.
In short, it's a matter of personal preference, but I won't be continuing this series.
(on a plus note though, all the chapters are really long (50+ pages), although it must be a big job for the scanslators)
