Kare wa Tomodachi

Description

In her middle school days, Hiyori only has eyes for Mizuno, a popular guy in school. She then partners up with Sasamoto Ren, Mizuno's best friend, and both hatch a plan to bring her and Mizuno together. However, things begin to change, as Hiyori and Ren grow closer, and they find themselves falling in love... with each other. As old loves fade away and pave way for new ones, obstacles also threaten to tear them apart, especially Ren's seemingly innocent but scheming friend, Kotone, who shares a past with Ren and isn't about to let him go.

Very good serious read, realistic and mature main leads with a lot of integrity

Deals w very realistic, real world themes, and characters are very developed and mature, with their own personal motivations moving the story consistently all throughout. I’m quite glad this is not the typical cookie cutter high school shoujo drama even though it seemed to start like one. This is an emotional roller coaster ride of a read so do expect a lot of ups and downs, and it is written so well that most panels are quite necessary and can not be done away without messing up the meaning of the story.

This manga deals with a high level drama like most commenters have mentioned but it’s executed nicely and personally in my opinion, it’s not overdone. It just seems like there’s a lot of drama bec the author chose not to have a ‘slice of life’ feel to the story, opting more to immediately tackle effects and consequences for each decision made by all the characters involved. And wow, decisions the characters make! Decisions with a capital D for sure - shows how mature the main characters are and how they try so hard to keep their integrity intact. This is not your typical wishy washy shoujo story that one often comes across. Best of all, the story and characters developed very naturally; and I love a very believable story... there’s no ‘cringing’ bec of cheesiness or a necessity for a suspension of belief, and that’s what made it a good read for me, events flowed smoothly. I do agree with most commenters that one of the side character really was very irritating, but I do believe that her character is still within the realm of believability... there ARE people like that.

My only complaints to this very well written manga is (1) the transition to with Yuuma in the middle of the series was not as well written and well paced as the rest of of the story, so there was a slight, but very obvious hiccup to the flow of the story and (2) (I think this may be a personal opinion) although the ending is nice and a happy one, since I love realism, it would have been more realistic if the final conflict was resolved but the relationships among the leads remain as they were. Although not too glaring and obvious, if one would give it a serious thought, one would notice that the ending did have a slight rushed and incomplete feeling. But overall it is still an acceptable ending and well done.

I love this manga, the characters and how it shows how serious people deal with serious issues. It’s definitely top notch. If you’re looking for a light read, this is not it, find soemthing else. But if you want to read soemthing w real substance , this one won’t disappoint at all, I’d strongly recommend it.

That side character though...

This would have gotten a WAY worse rating if not for the last like 10 chapters. To put it simply way too much drama, that is almost completely because of that btch (Kotone). If she wasn't in this story, there wouldn't have been any drama (or at least not much). She is HORRIBLE!!! I'd go insane if I was Hiyori and had to put up with that bullsht while dating the guy I liked (who also liked me). Unbelievable.

I liked the ending (last like 10 chapters). Thought that it actually made sense and the plot made sense (those chapters). The character growth was also not bad. The message not bad. But before those last chapters... my lord...

Side note: the amount of people calling Hiyori a slut on this site is depressing... she sleeps with 1 guy in the whole manga, and it's her boyfriend (who she was dating for quite some time). What in heavens name makes her a slut? I don't understand.

Started out okay

The beginning was rushed and lacked a bit more on what happened in Junior High but it was acceptable. Then it became weird, what with the breakup, getting together so fast. Don't you people know rebounds are never the answer. Despite that..it was still an okay read but it just BUGS me how Kotone gets to slap people when really, she's the one that every single character needs to give a slap to and no one called her out for her behaviour. It's like they're condoning everything she does. They're not even being sincere with her. Real friends should do more than just be there for each other. They should also help.those who are confused and lost by letting them know whats wrong and making them see how to get things right. In short. They should slap the b**** outta her.

Simple but good in all the right ways

The premise, plot, and characters are ordinary and we have been there, done that in other shoujo before, but this manga really hits all the right spots for me. I love the cover and chapter arts. The mangaka was able to skillfully take me back to middle and high school through the unique perspectives aka "cam angles" in the art. Look up the arts to see what I mean. I think the execution really elevated this manga to another level.

This is more like a throwback manga for me to reminisce my high school days so I'm not looking anything deeper than what is presented. So don't go into this manga expecting anything more than face value. Just sit back and and enjoy the atmosphere.

Indecisive characters create lots of drama.

To be honest, so far I barely made it till chapter 8 and I'm just about put this Manga out of my hands again. As for the reasons, there are various - Aside from the quite edgy and likeable drawing style. Sighs~

At first I kind of liked the predictions and things the main character seemed to remember, like being told that faith doesn't exist and such. BUT - The indecisive behaviour and hardly understandable changes of the characters (e.g. Kotone being kind of two faced, being all shy around others & Mizuno/Sasamoto and giving off this ready to face the rival vibe any time in front of Hiyori) is frustrating.

You can predict every misunderstanding and even the out of place reactions the lead to, so the storyline wasn't able to catch my attention. Maybe it's because I'm more into mature characters, but even for a first love scenario or fast romance this seemed kinda off. Sorry, but I'm out of it for now, because else this review might drag, too. Kkk.

Worth the frustration

This manga is very frustrating. There were so many times I wanted to reach into my computer screen and strangle one of the characters (mainly Kotone).. But in the end, everything turned out alright. I'll just ignore the fact that Hiyori is a big slut and that Mizuno went from being a sweetheart to a total douche. As a whole, the manga was well paced and very dramatic and emotional. Totally recommend it.

I absolutely loved this manga. Although Sasamoto had some flaws, I thought he was one of the greatest and sweetest guy characters that I've seen in a manga in a very long time. People are complaining that it had too much drama, but I think drama is part of what makes a manga great. It had drama but it wasn't over the top drama. I think the mangaka did a great job handling it and everyone pretty much got a happy ending...If this manga was liscenced in english I would definitely buy it. Until then, I really hope the sequal gets translated soon as well so I can see more of Sasamoto ^__^

Here are some problems with each character.
Hiyori - I don't understand the deal with first loves but was Sasamoto THAT good?! Mizuna was actually pretty decent but you still dump him in the end.
Mizuna - I feel bad vibes off you. Even with the positive, happy personality, I see a problematic person.
Sasamoto - K, that was really harsh to do that to Hiyori.
Kotone - You are a bitch. End of story. I don't see much character development from you.

Then again, I don't like megane. Aha.

This was one love triangle I really disliked.

Art was good. Just putting that out there.

Had such high hopes

I had such high hopes for the manga... I ended up not liking it.

The beginning was unrealistically fast, when she fell for Ren, but that's expected in some mangas.
I thought the manga was gonna go great, until Kotone broke them up. I still thought the story had potential, but it just all downhill from there.
There was just too much "I love you, but I hate you, and I actually want to love the other guy, and I suck, this sucks, baaaww."
I really wanted Hiyori to stay with Mizuna, but she didn't. She was being waaaay too selfish, and I was like "STOP DANCING AROUND AND FIND OUT WHAT YOU WANT WOMAN. AHHHH."
In the end, none of the characters were likable at all, except Mizuna. For me at least, and I felt so bad for him. And the ending was too rushed, and kind of a big WTF? So, I don't recommend reading this manga at all.
