The Beast Must Die

Description

After finding out his sister has been gang-raped by a secret fraternity before she commited suicide, Lee Kirin decides to catch the rapists and take revenge on them. He approaches one of the known members of the group, Kang Moo, and asks him for his cooperation. However, in order to join the fraternity and find out who led his sister to her death, he is asked to have sex with everyone in the fraternity. As time goes by, this isn't the only challenge he has to face in order to come closer to the truth. (Source: Lezhin)

I’m not sure if this is this authors first work, but it’s a bit sloppy. It really needed some good editing. The biggest issue is how it jumped right into the action and plot twists without any sort of buildup or even introducing the characters. I literally couldn’t tell the characters apart from each other. Every time a character was killed off or a plot twist was revealed, I was like “wait, who’s that again?”. And by not introducing/fleshing out individual characters, it took away from the impact of the big reveals.

It was a bit exhausting trying to keep up with who was who and what was going on. I would have liked to be able to focus on the feeling of suspense and excitement instead of constantly playing catch up. I also think the intro to the story could have been a way to set the tone and hook the reader, but instead it was just confusing and awkward.

Otherwise, objectively I thought it was decent. The plot was original and entertaining even if it wasn’t well executed. The big explanation mid story was actually pretty well done, and finally gave the individual characters a bit more dimension. The author did a good job not leaving any loose ends or unexplained plot holes (at least that I noticed).

Now on a personal note, I was not really a fan of this one. Towards the end I was getting quite frustrated with the ML’s behavior and the way he treated the MC. I know he’s a psychopath, and I get some of it was part of a plan, but still. It also really annoyed me how pathetic the MC was acting. He was desperately chasing after the ML no matter how he was treated. I’d also like to say that this does not have a happy ending in my opinion (after the side stories). It’s absolutely bittersweet at best.

Anyways these are personal dislikes, if you’re into darker and unstable relationships without a happy ending, I think you’ll enjoy this. I prefer a loving relationship with more external drama.

Update: It's been maybe 2+ years since I first read The Beast Must Die and it's still a favorite. Recently reread. However, the review by Mc43 is totally valid and while I love this story, I also agree with the issues they mentioned.

Top tier yaoi... The uke and the backstory could have been better, but a true winner!

Whoa what a rollercoaster of emotions and what a powerful manhwa! Love love loved it! So many questions pop into your head whiel reading it... And no clear answers are given. I love it! As a true romantic at heart, I somehow believe that the seme has some specs of emotion for the uke, despite being a hard core psychopath. It's not the love we have come to expect, but heck, who are we to gauge such delicate and nuanced things? And the plot is truly brilliant. the characters, the story line, the narration style, the twists and turns... You are never sure what's going on and whats gonna happen!

I think that the background over the uke's sister and her suicide was not well explained, and this marred the uke's motivations to a degree. The uke himself is also not written evenly. The seme is written top line, and I understand that the uke is a starinkly different type, but he never really impressed (until the extras, at some moments) and I have the feeling that he could have been a top tier char, if only they gave him more personality and character outside of his revenge scheme and his relationship with the seme.
However, when you stumble upon such a diamond in the sea of mostly mediocre (but solid) yaoi, it's worth sticking it out with some relatively minor flaws. Simpyl enjoy it...

So, this is a veeeery good story, I enjoyed it a lot and binged I in one seat: look at the tags and the other review, if you're fine with the warnings, please read this one.
I don't usually read yaoi stuff but I bumped into this manga while looking for something smut and psychological, I was hoping for it to be as good as Ten Count but this work exceeded my expectations.
It is perfect: the perfect dose of drama and fanservice. The author said that what Kang Moo feel isn't love and I somehow both agree and disagree: I think he's just unable to understand and express it and prioritizes his desire over a more noble feeling, but somehow I feel like he cares for Kirin and Kirins is aware of that. Kirin understood and has accepted how Kang Moon works.
Of course their relationship is romanticizes but, tbh, I'm happy for it, so if someone asked me: "is Kang Moo unable to love?" I'd probably say "no". It is a story about two people who want to be together, no matter what. It's distorted, twisted but I feel it's okay to call it love.
Kang Moo is trying hard to fight his nature.
I'm not sure this is realistic but it's okay, I like it the way it is, it's definitely better than having Kang Moo kill Karin. I don't want the reality to slap me in the face, I'm fine with a sweet lie ❤️
Beautiful work ❤️, a lot of sex but it never gets boring, the only thing I wish would have happened is: (SPOILER ALERT, idk how to hide the text, sorry)
I wish they switched roles at least once, when Kirin got a blowjob I was like jumping and dancing out of happiness ~ I'm sad it didn't happen

However this work was in the end Not my cup of tea atmosphere whise and overall type of relationship down the line that they had.

The art significantly improves later on. The sex scenes were SO good. The writing is excellent (dialogue wise, how they spoke to each other) but one of the MCs characterization are kind of....hm? I'm saying that on the real type of personality that they have

which is a psychopath who is interested in Lee Kirin but not in the unconditional love sense. I will give props to the author that they kept Moo consistent in the sense that he still has psychopatic urges, and Lee Kirin is more of a thing he is interested than having actual deep love for. At the same time its kind of weird that he has been in a "relationship" with Lee Kirin for SO long for SO MANY YEARS (as evident of the timeskips). Viceverse. Their relationship at the end of the day is a bit fucked up and bitter sweet. . Only read this if you are okay with an unconventional relationship.

Always happy and a real treat

So I've read The Beast Must Die for the 5th time now, whenever I publish a new print edition (German edition) I order it and start reading from the beginning. The Yoai story is simply the best I've ever read and I've read 399 already, but The Beast Must Die stays in 1st place for me. Not only the story but also the drawings are absolutely amazing and beautiful. I am particularly pleased because there are far too few print editions of Korean Manhwa's - it really is a gap in the market.
I hope that Lee Hyeon-Sook will also publish his new story "I'll Be Here for You" as a print edition... I would be very happy.

I enjoyed the dark themes. Although the problem with this is Kang Moo shows too much attachments for a psychopath. There's nothing human about a psychopath so the depiction of Kang Moo seems a bit wishy washy. Especially since Kang Moo get's excited by murder. There's no way he can be held down by relationship.
