I kinda want to like this, but at the same time I don't. The protag has an interesting power set, and season 1 seemed to mostly be about him finding out his origins and moving in the world. Problem is that with a VERY few noticeable exceptions, most of the people in the story are awful. Well, that's not entirely true. His party of non-humans are good, there's a few guild members that are good, and so on. The problem is the NPCs for lack of a better term. I can't quite call them side-characters, because they're SUPER one-dimensional. And that one dimension is trash. Serious trash. Bigoted, racist, judgemental, horrible excuses for sapient people.
And therein lies the problem. The MC is, quite frankly, a depressing emo POS. And so he's got this super passive pessimistic outlook on everything. That by itself would be hard to read. But then you look at all the crap he went through, and you realize he's actually ridiculously well adjusted. I can't even call it justified that he's such a ball of pity, because he's in an unrealistically good shape. The people surrounding him are serious trash, and it's not like his powers have grown or anything. He long ago should've snapped and ended everything around him or died. His personality is in TOO GOOD of shape to be realistic.
So you have this dichotomy of a depressing MC, but the 1D NPCs all around him just make you wish they all were dead. They're truly awful. BTW, there is literally no scale. You either have the absolute saint main party people, and... literally everyone else who are awful human beings.
And to top it all off, this isn't even a revenge story, where you can enjoy the catharsis of shitty people getting their karma. The vast majority of those terrible people just... live on. Pretty much the only ones who die are actual faceless NPC guards. Like the people who abused him his whole life, starved him, locked him in the attic, etc. Or the townspeople who committed adultery with a girl, and then called her a witch and burned her at the stake. Yeah, all those people live completely scot-free, no consequences at all.
So you have this story that has terrible people... who get scot free. You have a passive pathetic MC... who doesn't improve. You have a group of people (some non-human) who follow the MC around, yet he still gets damaged, despite them all wishing to protect him or whatever (they do a shitty job of it).
I'm just not sure what type of story this is supposed to be. The closest I can think of is kinda 'mystery' in that it delves into his origins. Not heartwarming, because everyone is trash despite we having some good people in his party. Maybe tragedy, because every human in this entire world sucks? Not slice of life because there's too much wandering from quest to quest.
Yeah, just not sure on this. I just can't see why people would want to read this. There's no sweetness, so it can't be bittersweet. Certainly not a read to feel happy about, nor is it pure tragedy. It also doesn't have any appeal like causing readers to be introspective or something. Dunno, it's just weird.
