Description

All souls of those murdered arrive at the Gate of Grudges. Izuko, keeper of the Gate of Grudges, presents each soul with three choices: pass through the Gate of Grudges to heaven and be reborn, refuse to admit death and remain as a ghost on earth, or haunt and kill one person and then proceed to hell and eternal suffering. What does each soul choose and why?

This really made me think about choices that people make, and how things may not turn out the way people expect them to be. Very good start to a manga, but I just wish it was longer....

this manga can be even more crazy, but alas the mangaka opted to make it quite normal. a wee bit boring and i expect more for the amount of material he can play with, but its not bad. try it.

A deep and scary peek into human souls...

I just finished reading this, and I'm left pondering over what I read.
I undoubtfully liked the story. The art is not my cup of tea, but for me, story is always as more important than art (probably not what a true manga-reader should say though...?).

But Where to begin and to end this review, it's all so twisted. I feel that this has a lot of potential. There is 2 important characters, and the rest change with each stories. All stories are interesting and diverse, though all about murder. I like to think that we can see some many different type of deaths. Random killing, love quarrel, psychose, suicide... and that for each, we get to think ourselves "what if it happened to me". Which choice would I go for? I don't agreee with all the choices they made, but I liked that too. And well, as I said, it is only a peek onto human soul, because we don't get to have the whole process behind choices, so we can only put our own thought in why the characters choose what they choose. So in a way, you get to see a little of your own soul looking at this manga. Frightening but deligthful. For those who like things that are a little more complicated than shojo, and that gives you material to think, ENJOY!
On my way to read the sequels!!!

PS: don't get me wrong though, I'm a shojo addict through and through! I just like a change sometimes!!!

As everyone else has already noted, this is really one series where you can't help but compare it to Jigoku Shoujo. In a way, it is similar to Jigoku Shoujo in the way that there is a female role that poses as the link between afterlife and life. From what I've read of Jigoku Shoujo, however, I feel like this series is a lot more mature. The reactions of the dead in every case are complex and complicated. I also liked how Skyhigh took the story of each victim and spun it in a very unique way. Overall, the author is able to really create this overarching theme of "everyone is struggling to live". He doesn't necessarily point out to the audience whether any one of the three choices each victim is offered is correct, but instead subtly focuses on the theme that everyone tries to live (before they make their individual choices on life, limbo, or hell). I also like how the author doesn't start preaching on the audience towards the end (which he could have easily done),

The art style and storytelling is very gritty and harsher (much harsher than Jigoku Shoujo...), which fits a manga dealing with themes of death, life, murder, death, etc. It's all very interesting.

Same plot as Jigoku Shoujo. Even the main character Izuko, resembles Enma Ai.
Anyways, this came waaay before Jigoku Shoujo, although it is not that popular.
It is a good read though.

Just a little comment. With the last story you can really feel that it's not exactly about revenge. In reallity, what guardians want is to save those souls. And if you pay attention in the other stories is the same.You will see that it focuses more in people's feelings than in the their "badness" or such. Most of the time you don't really think "that guy really deserved that". It's more like you hope they make the right choose for them.
What it says is that there's no point in getting revenge or holding a grudge.
I really think it has more depth than jigoku shoujo.But that's just my thinking.

I liked the short stories the mangaka put out -I couldn't really exactly pinpoint the "good guy" or the "bad guy" in all of the situations. And not everyone got "revenge," which was also pretty nice. The ending was all right, a lilttle disappointing I suppose.

The sequel, though, doesn't really follow the same format as this one.

Jigoku shoujo clone?

What is this that I hear about Skyhigh being a clone of Jigoku Shoujo?
I had read it back then when it was scanlated (2003) and in year it says 2001, while Jigoku Shoujo seems to begin being serialized in 2006...
So my answer to the question is "NO!".
Now, it's one of the most original short seinen manga I had read, Takahashi's style is definitively original, and his art compliments well the storytelling. While it might not be appealing to some readers, I consider it a "must read" for the seinen readers.

read the first 2 chapters.art is not to my liking,story is ok but i think if they choose the first option it'll be better.the plot is just like jigoku shoujo.revenge and then go to hell.

great short stories

This manga is a collect of very well thought out short stories. The stories are structured in such a way that only the story behind the various deaths are relevant, so there's no lack of depth or confusion about the character's character. However, the last story strayed from that formula. It tried to present a deeper story and, as a result, the characters' actions seem forced because there was no time to develop their reasoning.
