Sengoku Youko

Description

From Inkr:
The world is divided into two factions: humans and monsters called katawara. Despite being a katawara, Tama loves humans and vows to protect them from evil, even if it means fighting her own kind. Her brother Jinka, however, hates humans, despite mostly being one. The siblings are joined by a cowardly swordsman named Shinsuke, who wants to learn how to become strong. When the group uncovers a plot to experiment on humans and transform them into monsters, they vow to defeat whoever is behind it. Even if it means battling an entire army of warriors. The people they meet, places they see, and creatures they battle will be legendary.

NOTE: Only the first 6 Volumes(Arc 1) were licensed in English, no announcements have been made concerning further publication.

Mizukami Satoshi's first great manga

The first time I read this after seeing the high ratings, I gave up after 2 volumes. The art was strange, the characters bizarre, and the story seemed slow. Many years later I read the author's 2 other large works, Hoshi no Samidare and Spirit Circle, both of which are masterpieces beyond the description of words. And thus, I thought I would give Sengoku Youko another try. And what a blast it has been.

Sengoku Youko is lighter than the other 2 works mentioned above, but packed with more action and power. In a way, it is perhaps the author's most "shounen" work. Yet, it is anything but a typical shounen. The plot twists, the multiple protagonists, time skips, and character growths simply put it in a class apart from your typical shounen. It is an unbelievable ride from the slow and strange beginning to the epic and timeless ending. Do not pass this up!

Don't bother reading any comments, just get yourself and read this one. Actually, just read all of this Author's manga while you're at it. Manga Updates should really include a comment and rating part for the authors and artists too.

This manga may seem to have some weak parts but you'll understand that there was a reason for them later on. May be, you can consider the relationship between Tama and Jinka kinda bland but, when compared to the other characters, you can ignore it, I honestly loved them (the other characters), they are the ones that add the true value to this story and especially, believe it or not, the best is Shinsuke.

It was amazing. I'm speechless and not sure how to describe how I adore this manga. Actually, I adore all Mizukami Satoshi's works. The mangaka put events by events, connecting them, letting the characters met each other, growth, collide, and all those events happened in such a way that feels so natural. Battles scenes was amazingly done. Goddamn feeling between peoples and demon here!

The second part about Senya is just freaking amazing. Senya did grown in such a good way. Who would expect that such a small character at first is gonna be the main power later? I guess this is why I really love Mizukami-sensei's stories. All of the events were warped so carefully, and then they were revealed one by one in an unpredictable way. ^^

I was on the fence at the start of this series as its you know your general I'm justice and I'm weak blahblahblah but the characters do grow and become more/less complex as the events unfold and then every now and then u get hit with the feels. The middle does throw you off a bit but power through and it comes full circle, but seriously those feels at the end and that face punch of reality for what it's like to be a non human gets me every time I read a manga like this.

It does appear as if Mizukami Satoshi can do no wrong. I think I personally slightly prefer Lucifer and Biscuit Hammer over this, but Sengoku Youko is also almost perfect. There's drama, comedy, action, tragedy... and the story has no loose ends or damning weak points, and even ends satisfyingly with no important questions left unanswered.

i have a slight issue with the really cheesy way a lot of the dialog goes, so i knocked off a tenth of a point. Everything else i loved. the art has a very noticeable unique feel to it(and it fits the story pretty well), the characters are interesting to say the least, the story actually provided some developments that surprised me.... and the way they handled the maincharacter was amazing. he doesnt win his victories through stupid last minute shounen powerups. he has one supernatural weapon, and truckloads blood, sweat, and tears, as his advantageous. Plus though he does make drastic changes, it's not physical powerups... its mental... his somewhat lackadaisical state in the beginning to his midpoint, to his state in recent chapters is like riding a rollercoaster o.o.

It's hard to enjoy the characters to the fullest

I started reading this yesterday, got through the first arc and I was actually bothered at how fast the manga is going.

The dialogue isn't that... good for most of the part. I think the manga feels really rushed to the point that you don't get as much character development as you would hope. It's just a "power through this situation" most of the time, even with the twists it didn't exactly raise the bar anywhere. I think the author fails to connect the characters with the readers. The only person I felt that was worth looking forward was Shinsuke, even now he remains one of the reason to keep reading the manga.

I wish the author took time to give more thoughts on where the manga should head.

Like a comment said here, I also wouldn't recommend it to friends, it's far from amazing and I doubt they'll really enjoy the characters that are currently taking place in the story.

Very nice story, but it has a catch

I really liked the story up until there was this huge turn off/deal breaker for me.

The protagonist is removed and a very minor character becomes the new protagonist. Like he could have picked any other character we've seen in the story and it would have made more sense.

Art/story/characters was good though, but I just can't read this anymore.

Pre-deal-breaker, I'dd give this a 8/10.
Post-deal-breaker, it's rather hard to judge this, since I just stopped reading when it happened, so it would be a 0/10, but there are people who enjoy it and if you're one of those, the story seems to keep on going the same way, so it would be a 7/10 (-1 because of the protagonist).

Good one. One of the rarer shounens in which characters couldnt outgrowth an opponent after some magical trainings, and the first arc ending twist was quite okay-ish.

they did train but even with all that training in a time stretching sandbox was just for prolonging the fight then to summon the deux-ex-machina

I have never done this before, in midst of a manga leave it midway just to comment how it was. This Manga is good! People are wrong about the pace being slow to begin with, its fine the way it is. I love this manga!!

EDIT: I take my comment back. The manga is FREAKING AWESOME! It's some what similar to Naruto + Kekkaishi + Vagabond combined....ok maybe vagabond is an extreme case, but nonetheless ITS FREAKING AMAZING!! Cant wait for more chapters.
