Why does this website have a content policy?

Over time, we've found that we need to try to set some sort of standard for the type of information that we're aiming to have in our database. Outlined in this FAQ section is a list of policies that we hope people will follow to increase the quality of the information in our database.

What type of images can I submit for series?

We typically prefer the cover of a volume of the series. If it's a oneshot, the first page of it will do.

All images must be suitable for all ages. This means nothing sexually explicit or overly violent.

Our other guidelines are as follows:
No watermarked images
These are symbols on the image (usually over the art work) that signify where the image came from. Typically put there by scanlation teams of all languages, the original mangaka, or even by the person that scanned the image. We will not tolerate any images with watermarks.

Only original cover scans
Only upload cover images that come from volumes released in the series' original language or from the licensed USA volume releases. This means if the series was originally in Korean, the uploaded cover image needs to be from the Korean volume, not the Japanese one.

If you see an image that does not follow these guidelines, please report it to us by filling out a Change Request form which you can find in your User CP or by clicking here.

Can I add information for unscanlated oneshots, doujinshi, novels, and other alternate media?

Note: This only applies to oneshots, doujinshi, novels, and other alternate media (which we define as anything other than manga, manhua, and manwha)

We would prefer that you don't (so don't)
While we are a manga information website, we are primarily a website about scanlated manga. Unscanlated manga series are okay, but there are just too many other stuff to sort through if it's not going to be scanlated.

Once it has been scanlated and a release has been approved on this site, feel free to add the information! (For a release to be approved, it must be by an approved group, and there's a whole other set of rules associated with that.)

However, if it is licensed in English, go ahead and add it!

Can I add series that aren't printed yet?

We would prefer that you don't
Even if the publisher or magazine says that this mangaka is writing a series called by this name, things DO happen that prevent the series from actually being printed. Please refrain from adding these series into the database. Wait until the series is actually printed (normally first in magazine form) and available for reading in the author's country.

"Status in Country of Origin" Series Field

"15 Volumes (Ongoing)" means that 15 volumes of the series are out in tank form in the country of origin. The 16th volume is in the works. Even if chapters for volume 16 are out in magazines, there are only 15 volumes in print! So the field indicates exactly how many volumes are currently printed and are possible to buy if so wished.

If it is a new series and no volume is currently released because all the chapters are in magazines, either leave the field blank or put "0 Volumes (Ongoing)". Do not put the number of chapters released. Only volumes!

For doujinshi, leave this field blank unless there are multiple volumes of a doujinshi series that use the same name.

For oneshots, they should all be "Oneshot (Complete)".

"Year" Series Field

Just to clarify, the year entered should be the year that the series was first published (whether that be in magazines or volumes). If the first chapter was released in a magazine in 2007 but the first volume of chapters was published in 2008, then the correct input for this field is "2007".

Our reasoning for this is that if it was first scanlated in 2005 (using magazine raws) but it says 2007 in the "year" field as when the series first started (because 2007 was the year the first volume was actually published), then something seems wrong.

If it is a volume compilation of oneshots, enter the year the volume was published. DO NOT look at every oneshot and try to figure out the year of when the first oneshot was written. It is not what we want, and it's also a waste of time.

I found some incorrect info and corrected it, but someone just keeps changing it back to the wrong thing!

As basically any member can update the information on a series page, it can get pretty chaotic if some people continually believe the wrong information. Just notify us in a Change Request form or PM an admin (preferably lambchopsil) to help you.

Download Links

Please be aware that MangaUpdates is NOT responsible for the existence/maintenance of old download links. If a group is defunct, their domain has expired, an old release's download link doesn't work, etc, DO NOT come whining to us about it.

MangaUpdates does not and never will host manga. It is against our rules/policies to ask for downloads on the forums.

However, if a recent release is fake or does not exist, please report that to us. We continue to strive to maintain a clean database. Fake releases will not be tolerated. This includes April Fools Day (April 1st).
Within reason, we will change download link entries if you provide us the links (and the release must not be of a licensed series).

Claiming Projects

In the practice of fair scanlations all around, we (MangaUpdates) do not endorse, permit, allow, etc any sort of "claiming" series as projects from any individuals or scanlation groups.

This means please don't put a message "Future project of ____ group" on a series info page or a download message on a release to the effect of "We of ____ group plan to do _____ series" or anything similar to that effect.

This has always been our policy, and we have previously warned offending individuals. Please comply with our wishes.

Offenders will be warned and then punished on second offense

Author Names

When adding authors to the database, please follow these policies.

In the "Author Name (Romanji)" field, enter the name that the author uses when publishing. Enter it as it will appear at the top of the Mangaka page. The name must be in the Roman alphabet (also used in English, German, etc.) and follow the author's native name order:

If the author is Asian, then the name order is the surname (family name) first and the given name last, with the surname in all capital letters. For example: ODA Eiichiro.

If the author is Western, then the name order is the given name first and the surname last, with both names NOT in all caps, ONLY in initial caps. For example: Stephenie Meyer.

In the "Actual Name" field, enter only the Asian characters (not alternative translations) as it will appear in the "Name (in native language)" section. For example, ODA Eiichiro's name is entered in this field as: 尾田栄一郎.PARK Eun-Ah's name is entered in this field as: 박은아.

In the "Associated Names" field, enter ONLY alternative spellings of the author's name OR any other names that the author goes by. Do NOT include the name you entered in the "Author Name (Romanji)" field with the order reversed (so "Eiichiro ODA" or "Meyer, Stephenie" is WRONG).

What about oneshot collections or anthologies?

If there exists a collection or anthology for many oneshots, then only that collection should have a series entry. The individual oneshots will not have their own series entries. This applies even if the oneshot was originally published first. If there currently exists a series entry for the oneshot and then a collection if published that contains that oneshot, then the series entry for the oneshot is deleted and its name is merged into the series entry for the collection under the Associated Names field.

For the description of the series entry for the collection, please list all the oneshots in that collection, as well as the chapter number if available. Additional information such as each oneshot's description is also welcome.

If a oneshot series entry needs to be merged into a collection series entry, please submit a Change Request or post on this forum thread.
